There have been some exciting twists and turns in the One Piece story recently, and one of those twists was the news of Sabo killing Cobra, the King of Alabasta. This is just one of many things that happened and was revealed after the Wano arc concluded, but it has left readers scratching their heads. All of us are collectively wondering why did Sabo kill Cobra?
By now, you already know that this article contains spoilers for anime-only watchers. If you are reading this, you are already halfway spoiled about future events, but I’ll still give you a spoiler warning. Read it only if you are okay knowing what’s happened in the manga so far.
It has been revealed that Sabo has assassinated Nefertari Cobra, the King of Alabasta, but there’s got to be something going on with that. For one, it was announced by the World Government, and it’s highly likely that they are using Sabo as a scapegoat.
In this article, we will discuss why Sabo killed Cobra or why it seems he is just being framed for someone else’s crime. So, let’s begin!
What Happened At The Reverie?
Just before Wano Kingdom Arc officially began, there was a short Reverie arc that raised more questions than it answered. Even now, after the Wano arc has concluded, almost all those questions remain unanswered.
One of the many things that happened at the Reverie was Sabo’s plan to invade the Holyland of Marie Jois to rescue Kuma from the Celestial Dragons. And when Sabo saw how the Celestial Dragons were tormenting Kuma, he was enraged. However, he was with the Revolutionary Army commanders who managed to stop him from going berserk and staying calm and focused on the plan.
And that was it! We never really got much info after that on what happened during the Reverie until the recent chapters.
All we did know was that someone had died at Marie Jois since Big News Morgan was the one who published this news. At that time, it was assumed that it was Sabo who had died from the expressions on everyone’s face, especially that of Dragon, the Chief of the Revolutionary Army. But now we know it wasn’t Sabo who had died; it was King Cobra!
In the chapters following the conclusion of the Wano Kingdom arc, some new information was revealed that shed light on the events that happened at the Reverie.
What we know now is that Sabo and the revolutionaries didn’t just infiltrate the Reverie; they engaged in a battle with Marine Admirals, Fujitora and Ryokugyu, to rescue Kuma. The mission turned out to be a success, they managed to save Kuma, but for some reason, Sabo was separated from the group when they all escaped.
And then the news broke that Sabo had allegedly assassinated Nefertari Cobra, the King of Alabasta Kingdom! Accompanying this shocking news was another piece; Sabo was dubbed “the Flame Emperor,” and many people worldwide have started worshipping him!
Did Sabo Kill Cobra?
This hasn’t been proven yet; it’s only speculation at this point. There are still many things that happened at the Reverie that haven’t been revealed, and the murder of King Cobra is just one of them!
We know that just when Cobra was murdered, his daughter, Nefertari Vivi, the Princess of the Alabasta Kingdom, went missing. That was one heck of a time for her disappearance, and when you think that Sabo is also missing at this point, there’s only one conclusion to come to.
Sabo probably rescued Vivi from whoever was trying to murder her, but he couldn’t save Cobra!
Why do I say that?
During the Reverie arc, we learned that there is a “king” in the world of One Piece who controls everything from behind the scenes, Imu. And we know that the Five Elders were talking about the “cleansing” with a lot of focus put on Vivi’s photo. So, it’s probably safe to assume that Vivi was a target to be eliminated during the Reverie, and Sabo just happened to be there to ensure it didn’t happen.
That’s all we currently know about the happenings in the One Piece world. However, more information will likely be revealed in the upcoming chapter because the last chapter ended with Sabo getting in touch with Dragon and the Revolutionary Army.
Is King Cobra Really Dead?
He’s probably dead, like, really! But there’s another angle that we need to consider here. What if he isn’t dead?
There is a possibility that Cobra is not dead, and he just faked it. Whoever the person was behind the murder, Cobra must have tried to save Vivi from them and got caught in the crossfire.
But why would he fake his own death? Probably to make the World Government and the Five Elders think that they were mildly successful in their plans.
Their actual target was Vivi, but getting rid of the King of Alabasta is also not a bad thing considering that the Five Elders consider the Nefertari Family traitors since the Nefertari was one of the 20 original families that made up the World Government 800 years ago but chose to stay in their kingdom instead of going to the Holyland and becoming the Celestial Dragons. And then there’s also the fact that the kingdom of Alabasta is essentially Luffy’s ally at this point!
And during the Reverie, we did see that King Cobra had requested a meeting with the Five Elders, so there’s that information as well.
So, there’s a chance that Cobra is alive, and he simply faked his death to escape with Sabo and Vivi. He might return at some crucial moment in the story in the future, but we will have to wait and see what happens.
But apart from the theory that he faked his death, it’s also possible that he actually is dead, and he died while protecting Vivi!
Conclusion
Since the manga is still ongoing, and we were just informed that Sabo is alive and not dead, we will have to wait for the next chapters to drop to learn more about the things happening in the world of One Piece.
Things like the death of King Cobra, the reasons behind that happening, and who killed him will soon be answered as we learn about the events that occurred at the Reverie.
Till then, it’s great to speculate and theorize about whether Sabo killed Cobra or not, but I am sure that Oda-sensei is going to surprise us entirely with the reveal. So, did Sabo kill Cobra? Probably not, but let’s see what happens!
