Reze is, without a doubt, one of the most popular characters in the Chainsaw Man series. Considering the excellent character designing skills of Chainsaw Man’s author, Tatsuki Fujimoto, this is not a big surprise. Yet, Reze is an exceptional case, and we will discuss her in great detail throughout this article.
Sadly, Reze was one of those characters that were only introduced during a fraction of the title’s length, so we might not be able to talk much about her. Even then, something is always better than nothing, and if you want to know more about Reze in Chainsaw Man, this article is definitely for you.
As a hybrid between human and devil, we’ll talk about her powers and how she influenced the story, especially how she interacted with the main character, Denji, at the beginning of the Bomb Girl arc.
Spoiler Alert: There are tons of spoilers throughout this article, so read it only if you are okay with being spoiled about what’s going to happen in the story!
Who is Reze in Chainsaw Man?
Reze’s introduction to the series is what makes her such a popular character and the reason why she was well-liked by many of its fans. Not only that, her design is one of the greatest you can find throughout the series; there is no room for discussion. However, her true identity is later revealed, but before we talk about it, let’s talk about how she was introduced first.
When Reze was introduced to the series, Denji was “sure” of the feelings he had for Makima, claiming that there was no way he would fall for other girls besides her. Trying to hide from the rain with the help of a phone booth, he finds himself suddenly surprised by Reze’s presence as she thought about doing the exact same thing.
Reze cries after seeing Denji, claiming that his face is similar to her dog’s that passed away, which makes him slightly angry. Earlier that same day, Denji had eaten a flower he received in the streets and pukes to give it to her, quickly noticing that she was blushing from his gift. She invites him to visit her where she works so she can thank him properly, which he does instantly.
This is the beginning of their interaction and the first time Denji takes a good look at her!
Reze is presented as a young girl with a slender figure, black hair to the length of her shoulders, and a black choker. She is also a very flirty girl, hitting on Denji on every occasion she has, which makes Denji very confused as he’s pretty weak to girls.
After Denji says that he has never gone to school, just like her, Reze invites him to go to the school at night, where they experience how school is “supposed” to be, even swimming in the school’s pool together as Reze tries to teach him how to swim. Afterward, they get stuck in school as a typhoon causes heavy rain.
During that event, Reze is suddenly attacked after leaving Denji’s side, and here’s where things become a lot more complicated. After going to a festival with Denji, she proposes to Denji to escape together, claiming that she will make him happy, but Denji refuses.
After kissing him, she bites his tongue off and tries to kill him, just to be saved by Beam. After saying the word “Boom,” she pulls a trigger hidden behind her choker, revealing her true identity as the Bomb Devil hybrid.
Everything was just an act, and as an agent of the USSR, a Russian organization, she was tasked with the mission of taking Chainsaw Man’s heart.
How Strong is Reze – Powers & Abilities, Explained
As a hybrid, Reze has many of the abilities you would find in other hybrids, but she’s potentially a lot stronger than many hybrids shown in the series, including Denji.
The two things she enjoys the most, however, are her regeneration skills and her durability, as we can see how she can blow up her own body to regenerate it as if it was nothing and use her body parts as explosives.
As you might have expected, her transformation into a devil does portray the idea of bombs. Her head, for instance, becomes that of the bomb planes dropped during war times, and she has an apron made out of dynamite. Her powers are also heavily related to bombs, mostly involving explosions.
For instance, she can make things explode from a distance by creating a string of gunpowder that she can trigger whenever she wants, causing massive explosions. She’s also capable of making her own body explode without harming herself, and she can use these explosions to propel herself through the air, quickly reaching the speed of cars. She can also turn her limbs into torpedoes with a much higher explosive force, which she uses to attack Denji while they fight.
But her physical strength is also to be feared, as she easily withstood an attack from the Violence Fiend, known for having rather considerable physical strength and an aggressive type of fighting. After withstanding this attack, the Violence Fiend decided to flee immediately.
Even then, Reze was not so passionate about fighting and would have avoided fighting if it was possible. Even though she was trained to control her facial expressions and become a special agent from Russia, she was a pretty down-to-earth girl, and even at the end of her arc, she showcased a lot of human emotion, including the relationship she developed with Denji.
Although the betrayal coming from the hands of Reze did affect Denji to an extent, as dumb as he is, he managed to overcome it rather quickly, professing his feelings for her to the very end. It was a somewhat naive yet wholesome attitude coming from the protagonist, and if things had been a little different, perhaps Reze would have reciprocated them.
