When we talk about legendary series all across the field of both manga and anime, Hunter x Hunter always comes to mind. It managed to achieve a lot, including amassing an incredible fan base that still admires the workpiece, even during its times of hiatus, which have been considerable.
Hunter x Hunter is one of those series that gets better and better the more you read them, and it provides great character development involving the cruelty of the world introduced in the title and how things might not go as the characters would like.
Of course, this fantasy anime series has a great anime adaptation that was aired many years ago. The series was, sadly, stopped as the manga went through a hiatus, which made it hard for the fans of the series to stop at the anime and jump straight into the manga, which has a lot more content available.
If that is the case for you, you might be wondering how many Hunter x Hunter volumes are there, and I will help you with this aspect of your manga reading journey.
How Many Volumes of Hunter x Hunter Are There?
Hunter x Hunter is a manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi, who also wrote the uber-popular series Yu Yu Hakusho. The story starts as a fun and adventurous journey of the main character, Gon Freecs, who dreams of becoming a Hunter and travels the world to find his father. But the story soon brings in darker elements, and the characters are faced with the harsh realities of the world.
The series is so popular that it got an anime adaptation that aired in 1999. And it got another anime adaptation, a reboot, that aired from 2011 to 2014.
Although the series is extremely popular all over the world, it is infamous for going on indefinite hiatuses due to several reasons like the author’s health. But even so, fans are hoping that the manga will continue and we will be able to read more about the world of Hunter x Hunter because the story has just got even more interesting with the revelation of the existence of the Dark Continent!
So, how many volumes are there in Hunter x Hunter? And how many chapters are available right now?
At the time of writing this, there are 400 manga chapters released, and most of these are collected in 37 tankōbon volumes.
But the manga is still ongoing, so expect this number to change by the time you read this article, only if the manga hasn’t gone on another hiatus!

What is Hunter x Hunter Manga About?
Hunter x Hunter presents a world vast enough for it not to have been explored in its entirety. This work is then tasked to people known as Hunters, who travel to unknown locations, gather information, and enjoy the greatness of treasure and adventure.
These hunters, however, must undergo an incredibly rigorous annual examination to be provided with a Hunter license, allowing them to go to places normal people would be unable to visit.
Gon Freecss, the main character of the series, is a young boy who dreams of becoming a hunter just like his father, who he believed to be dead before his mentor, Kite, revealed the truth. To pass the examination, Gon trained his whole life until the time to leave his island finally arrived.
During the examination, Gon meets and befriends a cast of characters that would accompany him during the journey. The other applicants were Leorio, a man who wanted to become a hunter to amass a fortune and pay for his career as a doctor; Kurapika, a young man who wants to avenge the death of his clan and intends to use the hunter title to gather as much information as possible to achieve his goal, and Killua, a young boy pretty close to Gon in terms of age, who comes from a well-known family of assassins.
The four of them would then encounter many challenges during their examination, some of which would be considered life-threatening. This adventure will also showcase that being a hunter might involve being ruthless, and at times, they will have to face enemies who do not care for the lives of others.
The greatness of this title is that, although it starts being relatively wholesome, even having two children as main characters, it grows darker as you keep reading. The main character, Gon, changes alongside the events he experiences to keep himself alive and protect those he considers important. A must-read manga series for those who like shonen titles that are not scared of being mature and those who enjoy action and character growth.
Conclusion
Even then, if you struggle with a series that goes through a regular hiatus, you might want to leave the journey for later. I do recommend reading Hunter x Hunter to anyone who considers themselves a manga enthusiast. I am also aware of how hard it can be to start a series knowing that, at the end of the road, the series is not finished and that the series will be barely updated due to its author’s health, as Yoshihiro Togashi has been dealing with health issues for quite some time.
Even then, if you enjoy the journey more than what awaits, I believe giving Hunter x Hunter a chance is worth it! Knowing how many volumes of Hunter x Hunter are there for you will also ease the burden, making it easier to get invested in the series. So if you are a huge fan of the action and adventure genre, definitely give Hunter x Hunter a read!
