All legendary Pokémon in the series are overpowered, rare, and unique-looking. With their unmatched powers and abilities, it is pretty evident that they’re put on the upper echelon of the Pokémon hierarchy. That is precisely why some legendary Pokémon are also considered “Gods” in the Pokémon universe.
From Generation 1 to Generation 8, we have 63 legendary Pokémon, 65 if we count Gen 9’s two legendaries, that have made appearances and are designed in the most brilliant way possible. In this article, we’ll talk about the legendary Pokémon and the mythical Pokémon from all generations.
Though, you may ask, what’s the difference between a legendary and a mythical Pokémon? The answer is straightforward, actually!
Both these types of Pokémon are extremely powerful, much stronger than your regular Pokémon, and these are extremely rare to find. The only difference between mythical and legendary is that mythical Pokémon are even rarer to find than legendary!
With that little tidbit out of the way, let’s not waste more time and start seeing all the legendary and mythical Pokémon introduced from Gen 1 to Gen 9!
Note: In this article, I have listed every single legendary and mythical Pokémon introduced throughout the series. But if you want to find out who are the best legendary Pokémon and the best mythical Pokémon, I have created separate articles for those!
A List Of All Legendary Pokémon & Mythical Pokémon:
All Generation 1 Legendary Pokémon
Generation 1 of Pokémon came back in 1996, featuring a total of 4 legendary and one mythical Pokémon. Based on the original Kanto region from Japan, this generation had bird-type legendary Pokémon with different natures.
The “Legendary Birds” of generation 1 were Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres, and then there is the man-made Pokémon, Mewtwo, who is so powerful that it immediately earned legendary status. And, on the mythical side, we have Mew, who is also extremely powerful as it possesses the genetic composition of every existing Pokémon species and thus can use any move of any Pokémon!
Articuno is an ice and flying type Pokémon, while Zapdos is a spiky-looking bird with the primary type as electric. Finally, we have Moltres, which became one of the most fan-favorite upon release and is a flying and fire-type Pokémon.
Mewtwo was created by scientists in the Pokémon mansion, and it is a psychic-type Pokémon! So is Mew, which makes sense since Mew’s DNA was used to create Mewtwo.
All Generation 2 Legendary Pokémon
Generation 2 brought us shiny Pokémon along with their genders. In this generation, we have a total of 5 legendaries and one mythical Pokémon.
This generation introduced the “Legendary Beasts” consisting of Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, and the “Tower Duo” consisting of Lugia and Ho-Oh. And Celebi was the mythical Pokémon introduced in Gen 2!
Raikou is a popular legendary from generation 2, an electric type. It is based on the Sabretooth tiger and is found in the burning tower of the Kanto region. The second legendary of generation 2 is Entei, a fire-type Pokémon so powerful that when it roars, a whole volcano erupts, causing a lot of destruction. The third and probably the coolest-looking legendary, Suicune, is a water-type, and it is pretty sneaky when it comes to various battles.
Then we also have Lugia, a psychic/flying type Pokémon that can be found near the Naval Rock in the Kanto region.
There was a lot of controversy about Lugia being a water-type, but Lugia is a psychic-type legendary Pokémon. And how can we forget the original Pokémon, Ho-Oh? It was the first legendary Pokémon we saw at the end of the first generation.
Ho-Oh is said to be so influential that it created the legendary beast Pokémon, Raikou, Enta, and Suicune. It is also a fire-type Pokemon that resembles a peacock.
And the mythical Pokémon in generation 2 is Celebi, a psychic and grass-type Pokémon that looks quite a bit like Mew; it can be found at the Ilex Forest Shrine.
All Generation 3 Legendary Pokémon
In the third generation of Pokémon, 135 new Pokémon were introduced, and in those 135, there were 8 legendary Pokémon and 2 mythical ones.
First, there are the “Legendary Titans,” which consists of Regirock, Regice, and Registeel. Then, we have the “Eon Duo” formed by twin Pokémon, Latios and Latias. And finally, there is the “Weather Trio,” consisting of super-ancient Pokémon: Kyogre, Groudon, and Rayquaza.
This generation also introduced Jirachi and Deoxys, two of the many mythical Pokémon in the series!
Starting with the Legendary Titans, Regirock is a rock-type Pokémon, while Regice is an ice-type Pokémon. Rounding up the trio is Registeel, which, as you guessed it, is a steel-type Pokémon.
Then, there’s the Eon Duo, which consists of Latios and Latias, both of which are dual dragon/psychic-type Pokémon. They are twin Pokémon, so they look almost similar but with a different color scheme.
And finally, there’s the Weather Trio consisting of ancient Pokémon! Kyogre is the water-type Pokémon, Groudon is the fire-type Pokémon, while Rayquaza is a dual dragon/flying type Pokémon.
Let’s not forget about the mythical creatures as well. Jirachi is a steel and psychic type Pokémon and has its own movie called “Jirachi Wish Maker.” Then we have the ultra-popular Deoxys, a psychic type that can change into many forms specializing in defense, attack, or speed.
All Generation 4 Legendary Pokémon
Generation 4 was perhaps the most influential Pokémon generation of all time. Even though there weren’t many changes, we saw 9 new legendaries and 5 new mythical ones.
The first is the “Lake Guardians,” which consisted of Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf. Then, there is the “Creation Trio,” featuring some of the most powerful Pokémon – Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina. And finally, there are Cresselia, Regigigas, and Heatran rounding up the legendary count!
Also, this generation has five mythical Pokémon – Phione, Manaphy, Shaymin, Darkrai, and Arceus!
Uxie, Mesprit, and Azelf are all pure psychic-type Pokémon, representing knowledge, emotion, and spirit/willpower, respectively. Arceus, known to have created the Pokémon world, created the Lake Guardians and is therefore considered their master.
Then we have the Creation Trio, where Dialga (steel/dragon type), Palkia (water/dragon type), and Giratina (ghost/dragon type) exist. Palkia can warp space and live and travel in different dimensions, while Dialga can control time and travel in the past, present, or future.
The remaining legendary Pokémon are Heatran, a fire/steel-type Pokémon; Regigigas, a normal-type and the master of the Legendary Titans of Gen 3 and Cresselia, a psychic type “Lunar” Pokémon.
Now to the mythical side, we also have Darkrai, a dark-type Pokémon, who is the rival and counterpart of Cresselia. Then we have Phione and Manaphy, both water-type Pokémon, and then we have a cute-looking grass-type called Shaymin.
And finally, there is Arceus, a normal-type Pokémon, who is considered the “God Pokémon.”
All Generation 5 Legendary Pokémon
From the Unova region, generation 5 Pokémon became very popular. There are a total of 9 new legendaries with 4 mythical.
First, there’s the trio of Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion making up the “Swords of Justice.” Then, there are the “Forces of Nature,” comprising Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus. And finally, there is the “Tao Trio” of dragon-type legendaries – Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem!
As for the mythical Pokémon, four new names were introduced in Gen 5 – Victini, Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect!
Cobalion, from the Swords of Justice, is a legendary steel/fighting type Pokémon, Terrakion is a dual rock/fighting type, while Virizion is a grass/fighting type Pokémon.
The legendaries in the Forces of Nature look quite like genies. Tornadus is a flying-type Pokémon, while Thundurus and Landorus are dual types, electric/flying and ground/flying, respectively.
The next group is the Tao Trio, where Reshiram is a dragon/fire-type Pokémon. Zekrom is another overpowered Pokémon that is a dragon/electric-type Pokémon. And the last is Kyurem which is a dual dragon/ice-type Pokémon.
Coming to the mythical side of generation 5, we have the psychic/fire-type Victini, the water/fighting-type Keldeo, the normal-type Meloetta, and the steel/bug-type Pokémon, Genesect.
All Generation 6 Legendary Pokémon
There were only 3 legendaries and 3 mythical Pokémon introduced in Generation 6. This was a step down compared to previous generations and temporarily disappointed fans. However, the concept of Mega Evolutions was introduced, along with a new Pokemon type called “Fairy-type.”
The three legendary Pokémon introduced in Gen 6 were Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde, which make up the “Aura Trio.” And the three mythical Pokémon introduced were Diancie, Hoopa, and Volcanion!
Starting from the Aura Trio group, we have Xerneas, who look unique and beautiful from the aesthetic point of view. Xerneas is a fairy-type Pokémon with two evolutions – active and neutral mode. Yveltal is a dark/flying-type Pokemon from the Aura Trio, and according to the Pokémon franchise, it indicates natural disasters. Completing the trio, we have Zygarde, a dragon/ground-type Pokémon that resembles a snake.
Regarding the mythical Pokémon, we have Diancie, a rock/fairy type who can also mega-evolve into Mega Diancie. Then we have Hoopa, a psychic/ghost-type, that can transform into Hoopa Unbound after using the Prison Bottle Key.
Finally, we have Volcanion, a unique fire/water-type Pokémon that is quite odd when you look at it. This Pokémon is quite difficult to beat due to the opposite dual natures, making it a legendary Pokémon.
All Generation 7 Legendary Pokémon
Generation 7 Pokémon were based in the Alola and Kanto region. This was one of the craziest generations where we had 11 legendary Pokémon, 5 mythical, and 11 Ultra Beasts!
First up were the “Beast Killers” comprising Type: Null and Silvally; then there are the “Guardian Deities,” which consists of Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini; then there are Cosmog, Cosmoem, Solgaleo, and Lunala making up the “Sun and Moon Line.” And finally, we have the powerful Pokémon, Necrozma!
For the mythical Pokémon, we were introduced to Magearna, Marshadow, Zeraora, Meltan, and Melmetal, all of whom look absolutely stunning!
The first legendary we have is Type: Null, and while it might sound like a computer error, that’s just the name of this artificially created Pokémon. It is a normal-type Pokemon; however, insanely strong if we look at its stats scores. The next legendary Pokémon we have is Silvally, a normal-type Pokemon. When Type: Null evolves, it usually turns into Silvally.
Next, we have the Guardian Deities group with Tapu Koko (electric/fairy type), Tapu Lele (psychic/fairy type), Tapu Bulu (grass/fairy type), and Tapu Fini (water/fairy type).
Cosmog and Cosmoem are two legendary psychic-type Pokémon that are found in the Pokemon Moon and Ultra Moon series. They’re oddly quite heavy, weighing around 999.9 kg for being only 10cm tall.
Next, we have the Light Trio, where Solgaleo (psychic/steel type), Lunala (psychic/ghost type), and Necromaza (psychic-type) exist.
All Generation 8 Legendary Pokémon
Generation 8 had 14 legendary Pokémon and only one mythical type, making Generation 8 one of the best generations for fans of legendaries.
First, we have the “Hero Duo,” Zacian and Zamazenta, then there’s the extraterrestrial Pokémon, Eternatus. Next, we had new “Legendary Titans,” namely Regieleki and Regidrago; then the legendary horse Pokémon, Glastrier and Spectrier; and the Pokémon worshipped as the ruler of Galar, Calyrex.
There was also a new addition to the “Forces of Nature” in the form of Enamorus, and then there was Kubfu and its evolved form, Urshifu. Finally, we had the “Galarian Legendary Birds,” consisting of Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres.
There’s only one mythical Pokémon in this generation, which happens to be Zarude, the rogue monkey Pokémon.
Starting with the Hero Duo, Zacian is a fairy-type Pokémon that transforms into fairy/steel-type when holding a Rusted Sword; and Zamazenta is a fighting-type Pokémon that transforms into fighting/steel-type when holding the Rusted Shield.
Next up is Eternatus, an alien Pokémon that crash-landed on Earth some 20,000 years ago. It is a powerful Pokémon and possesses a dual dragon/poison type. It can also use Gigantamax and Dynamax forms.
In the Legendary Titans, we have Regieleki which is the electric-type Pokémon, and Regidrago, a dragon-type Pokémon. Then, there’s Glastrier, an ice-type, and Spectrier, a ghost-type Pokémon; and there’s also Calyrex, a psychic/grass-type Pokémon.
We were also introduced to Enamorus, a fairy/flying-type Pokémon, as well as Kubfu and Urshifu, who both are fighting-type Pokémon. And finally, the Galarian Legendary Birds, with Galarian Articuno being psychic/flying-type, Galarian Zapdos being fighting/flying-type and Galarian Moltres being dark/flying-type.
And when we talk about the mythical Pokémon, we have Zarude, a dark/grass-type Pokémon that was first introduced in the Secrets of the Jungle movie.
All Generation 9 Legendary Pokémon
While generation 9 hasn’t officially been released, we’re already introduced to the new legendary Pokémon that are going to be released in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in 2022.
We don’t know what their types will be but from the looks of it, Koraidon might be a dual dragon/fighting type while Miraidon will be dragon/electric-type Pokémon.
Conclusion
The little information we have about generation 9 brings us to the end of the article. I hope that you were able to learn about all the mythical Pokémon and all the legendary Pokémon that have been introduced in the series so far.
