If you have a look at the most popular anime titles right now, you are going to discover that a majority of them are anime with overpowered main characters. And most of them might be isekai anime titles or fantasy anime shows because that gives you the proper setting to have a powerful character. And if you love watching such shows, then you are in luck as I have created a list featuring all the popular anime with overpowered protagonists!

You might ask what’s the point of a story where the protagonist can take care of a fight in an instant by simply overwhelming their opponents with a show of strength, but I personally think that’s exactly what makes things interesting. You have to be a genius to make fights featuring OP characters interesting and most of the popular shows have done it quite masterfully. You can keep watching this characters in a battle, even though you know what the outcome is going to be, and yet be thrilled by every second of it.

This is the reason why anime with overpowered main characters are so popular. It doesn’t matter if the protagonist started off as a wimp and later become overpowered, or they were strong enough from the beginning, or gained some OP ability at some point of time; this list features the anime shows that are the best in this category. So, let’s not waste any more time and begin our list!

Best Anime with Overpowered Main Characters (2021)

21. Tokyo Ghoul

tokyo ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul takes place in a world where ghouls are superpowered human predators that coexist with human beings. These ghouls are more powerful than each other depending on the number of human flesh they consume. Out of these ghouls, half-ghouls are stronger than normal ghouls. These half-ghouls can be born naturally or created artificially by transplanting ghoul organs to a human being. The occurrence of the two cases, however, is rare.

This is the vicious world that our main character is thrown into. Our innocent main character, Ken Kaneki, becomes a half-ghoul when he went on a date with a lady who turned out to be a ghoul, and a doctor saved his life using ghoul parts. Ken Kaneki has to balance his life as a ghoul while maintaining his other human responsibilities. As the story progresses, Ken shows immense strength that is enough to conquer even the fiercest of ghouls.

20. Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They?

problem children are coming from another world aren't they

If you had superpowers, you would want to live an exciting life and fight evil. Nothing else would satisfy you. There is no joy when you have powers and can’t use them for good because then you would be frustrated. Meet Izayoi Sakamaki, Asuka Kudou, You Kasukabe, three massively gifted psychic teenagers who are bored with their mundane lives and want opportunities to use their powers for good. The opportunity came when the three got transported to another world. There, they have to work with the inhabitants of that world to prevent demons from taking over.

The characters have to do this while also trying to get avenues to have fun and explore their overpowered psychic abilities. You are going to have loads of fun watching this amazing anime show!

19. Wise Man’s Grandchild

wise man's grandchild

I didn’t want to add this anime because I was a bit disappointed with the easy storyline with virtually no plot developments. It only made the list because it is an anime with overpowered main character; but I believe it has potential, should the writers decide to become serious with it. The setting is just right. it just needs its writers to be more inspiring than they currently are.

Nonetheless, it is a fun watch, and you would enjoy the straightforwardness of the anime. The main character not only falls in love but gets the girl easily, which was quite refreshing to watch. There aren’t many twists, but I hope the writers of this anime sit up and use the wondrous world they have.

For context, the anime starts the way most isekai anime starts. The main character was killed in an accident. Instead of his soul passing on, he gets transported to another world. In that world, he is born as a child with magical powers. His memories from his past life remain intact, and he uses the memories about science that he has with his magic to become the hero of his new world and assemble a team of magic users which he trains to protect the kingdom from threats.

18. Assassination Classroom

assassination classroom

I must confess that Assassination Classroom made me shed a few tears as it hit me in the depths of my soul. Don’t let the title mislead you. You would think it’s an anime about training people to be killers, but it’s so much more than that. The anime teaches the importance of not discriminating against people or limiting people because of their academic performances. People face circumstances outside of school or work that impact their performance, and this anime explores that.

The anime revolves around Koro-sensei (an overpowered class teacher) who requested to teach a class of students who must kill him before a certain day, or he would blow up the Earth just like he blew up the moon. The plot might look straightforward, but it isn’t. Its story explores the concept of humanity to perfection and you should watch the show!

17. In Another World with My Smartphone

in another world with my smartphone

The plot of this anime is fun. God struck the main character, Touya Mochizuki, with a lightning bolt that killed him instantly. But God tries to rectify his mistake by offering to reincarnate him in a fantasy world filled with magic and grants him a request of taking his smartphone with him. In addition to that, God made Touya stronger and gave him powerful magical abilities. Touya becomes a sensation in his new world without much effort and also earns the love and appreciation of many gorgeous ladies around him.

I love the premise of this show. It is different from the usual isekai anime format, and it is a light-hearted but excellent watch. It shows how second chances can be fun!

16. How NOT To Summon A Demon Lord

how not to summon a demon lord

Isekai genre is highly saturated when it comes to popular anime with overpowered main characters. This anime titled How NOT To Summon A Demon Lord revolves around a teenager summoned into a game world where he accidentally becomes the master of the people who summoned him.

The main character begins to navigate this new world which turns out to be the world of his favorite game, and he discovers that he himself is the character that he used to play the game as. Plus, he’s got all his character’s magic, his stats and powerful abilities at his disposal!

15. Mob Psycho 100

mob psycho 100

Mob Psycho 100 is a different type of show. While some people want powers and use them any excuse they get, Shigeo Kageyama a.k.a. Mob, on the other hand, wants to be normal and isn’t eager to use his powers. he only uses them at the behest of his master to exorcise spirits.

As the most powerful psychic of this fantasy world, Mob likes doing the regular stuff and he also joins the Body Improvement Club to stop being weak. He usually keeps his emotions under check to suppress his powers, but when his emotions reach 100% or when he gets really angry, he lets loose and displays the kind of strength that makes this show one of the best anime with overpowered main characters!

14. The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious

the hero is overpowered but overly cautious

Imagine trying to save the world, and you have the power to summon a savior. You would summon the most powerful one you can find, and that’s exactly what happens in the beginning of this series.

A goddess was given the task of saving a world from the demon king, and she summons a hero to help her with this. The hero she summons is quite overpowered but he is way too careful in everything he does. He doesn’t like to attack strong enemies and goes all out even to defeat the weaker enemies. Even when traveling to enter the safest areas, our hero will train to increase his levels before entering such areas because he wants to always be ready for all kinds of dangers. The hero has too much power but also too much cautiousness, and the show is quite hilarious as well!

13. Plunderer

Plunderer is set in a world where social standing is based on ‘counts’. The higher the count, the higher the social class you get. Anyone with a lower count suffers a painful descent into a place thought to be worse than hell.

The anime begins with a nomadic female protagonist looking to dismantle the societal structure after her mother’s descent to zero counts. The female lead hopes to do this by searching for the legendary overpowered male protagonist. Will she find him? Will they triumph? You need to watch this show to find out the answer.

12. Shokugeki no Souma

shokugeki no souma

Shokugeki no Souma, also known as Food Wars, is unlike any other show on this list because there are no explosions or fast-paced fights here. It is an anime about cooking and food and cooking competitions. The main character here is an overpowered food chef which is the reason why you see the title in this list.

This anime is excellent, both in storytelling and animation quality. It tells you the story of Soma, a nobody whose father enrolls him in one of the most prestigious culinary school. He then tried to make a name for himself as one of the most skillful chefs ever by overcoming various hurdles. The show is a pretty nice mix of comedy, drama, romance and ecchi genres, and is totally worth watching!

11. The Misfit Of Demon King Academy

the misfit of demon king academy

No for of media has given demons more airtime than the anime industry. This particular anime show features Anos Voldigoad, the Demon King of a distant past, who chose to sacrifice himself to end a terrible war between demons and humans.

Anos planned to wake up in the future, and the demons created an academy to identify Anos when he returns, but things are not as they seem. The former demon king did not find his reawakening as magnificent as he thought it would. He became the outcast of the world he once ruled and is now on a mission to fix what has gone wrong.

10. Blood Lad

blood lad

Vampires are scary, ambitious, blood-thirsty demons, aren’t they? Not Staz Charlie Blood. Charlie has a violent reputation, but he is very different than how he is described. The man wants to loaf around and enjoy life, and he is not at all interested in human blood but he is completely obsessed with Japanese culture.

His excitement peaks when a human, a Japanese girl, accidentally ends up in his realm, but it was short-lived as she is gruesomely murdered. Her death becomes a focal point of his motivation. He vows to raise her from the dead because that would give him a chance to visit the human world, something that he’s always wanted to!

9. The Saga of Tanya The Evil

the saga of tanya the evil

Guys, this anime might be a little bit creepy because unlike most of the anime dealing with the main character reincarnating into another world, this particular anime is grim and probably one of the dark anime shows out there!

The protagonist of this show is a male in a girl child’s body. The main character challenged the ultimate divine being and got reincarnated into a little girl’s body in another world full of magic but at the brink of war. Tanya can’t live the peaceful life of her past life and has resolved to take the bull by the horn and builds a powerful empire as she rises through the rank of the army using her cunning wits, her ruthlessness and her unparalleled tactical aptitude.

8. Overlord

When talking about the best anime with overpowered main characters, there’s no way we are going to ignore this show because the main character, Momonga, is nothing less than a god when it comes to raw power.

Overlord is an anime show about a gamer who has built his avatar to high levels but he finds out he is trapped in the game world and can’t leave even after the game’s servers begin to shut down. Since, Momonga loves this virtual world and prefers it to the real world, he doesn’t moan at his misfortune. Instead, he throws himself into his new world, wary of his immense strength and not wanting to become a dictator.

7. Hellsing Ultimate

hellsing ultimate

The media loves putting out works on the war between humans and supernatural creatures. You would think because there is too much media on it, the stories would have become stale, repetitive, and uninteresting. Not Hellsing Ultimate!

Hellsing Ultimate tells the story of strife between humans and creatures of the dark. Interestingly, humanity’s sharpest weapon is an OP creature of the dark, the famed and feared vampire Alucard. Odd, isn’t it, that one of the most powerful vampires would be on the side of humans and fighting other vampires?

6. Dr. Stone

dr. stone

This is unlike most of the anime mentioned on this list because “overpowered” here means “overpowered intelligence”. And Senku Ishigami is the most overpowered anime character when it comes to intelligence!

Dr. Stone is a popular shonen anime revolves around humanity’s descent into the stone age as every human becomes stone after being petrified by a strange light. Thousands of years pass and technology becomes non-existent as nature thrives instead. But as soon as out heroes awaken from stone, the race is on to turn every human being back to human via a formidable partnership of an intelligent teenage scientist and his athletic friend.

5. No Game No Life

no game no life

Isekai genre is like oxygen to anime writers, since there are so many shows where the characters are whisked to a new world. And even though there are so many titles, it still remains one of the most popular genres as it makes massive sales compared to shows focusing on other genres.

No Game No Life may be an isekai title but it is not your average isekai show. Even if the anime is one of the funniest anime you would ever watch, the stakes are high. The show is about two teens who are pro-gamers but have become too good at gaming. Nothing and no one is able to challenge them until they receive an email that takes them to another world where all the decisions, even the fates of nations, are determined through games.

4. The Disastrous Life Of Saiki K.

the disastrous life of saiki k

The title of this show could not be more accurate. The show’s plot revolves around an OP psychic who aims to live a normal but can’t seem to be able to. The main character continues to attract weird people who threaten all of his attempts to lead an everyday life.

This show has some similarities to Mob Psycho 100 as the main character here, Saiki Kusuo, wants nothing to do with his power and just wants to lead a normal life! This is one of the most hilarious anime shows, and since it features a really powerful protagonist, it is among the best anime with overpowered main characters that you should definitely watch!

3. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime

that time i got reincarnated as a slime

Yeah, That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime is an isekai title but hear me out because this one starts off in quite a unique way. You are actually going to love watching this particular show as it revolves around a 37-year old man who dies and is reincarnated in a new magical world, but as a slime.

It might seem that he’s got the worst of lucks, but during the reincarnation process, he is gifted with quite a few skills based on the dreams he wasn’t able to fulfill and the things he wasn’t able to do in his previous life, and the things he experienced while he was dying. As he begins his life as a slime, he uses this skills to become more and more powerful, he acquires underlings and before he knows it, he becomes the “king of the monsters” and one of the most overpowered beings in this universe!

2. The Irregular At Magic High School

the irregular at magic high school

This show throws a spanner into the concept of OP because the OP main character is not OP. He lacks magical powers, but he always manages to get the advantage over supposedly stronger characters. What the MC lacks in magic, he makes up with insane martial art skills and unique magic techniques; and his intelligence is also top-notch!

The show revolves around siblings Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, who enroll in a school but end up being placed in different classes. Miyuki was placed in the honor student class due to her excellent magical abilities, while Tatsuya is placed in the ‘weed’ section as he is magically inept. But don’t let that fool you because he is extremely overpowered; fans don’t call him “Godsuya” for nothing.

1. One-Punch Man

one punch man

Follow Saitama and his incredible journey to become a hero after he attained superpowers when his hair fell off, and he became bald. Actually, that is how Saitama would tell you, but it turns out the training he did has no bearing on how he got his powers. In reality, he doesn’t know he got his insane super-strength!

One Punch Man is probably the best anime with overpowered main character, and it tells the story of a man who is so powerful that he can destroy any enemy with a single punch. This has gotten pretty boring for Saitama and he begins looking for the greatest challenge, a villain that could make him fight seriously. Will he get that villain? Will he finally enjoy having powers? Watch the show and find out!
