New Starters: Fuecoco, Quaxly, and Sprigatito
A Pokémon adventure is not complete without its starters. Fuecoco, Quaxly, and Sprigatito are the first Pokémon to be unveiled by Nintendo. We may not know what their evolutions look like yet, but we sure do welcome these three new starter Pokémon.
Fuecoco
- Type: Fire-type
- Classification: Fire Croc Pokémon
- Ability: Blaze
Fuecoco was revealed during “Pokémon Presents” in 2022. The laid-back Fire Croc Pokémon is a little lazy and loves to chow down on food. Not since Generation 1’s Charizard have we seen a fire-type starter Pokémon who is also a reptile. Hopefully, this little fellow will grow up to be as fierce and fiery as its Gen 1 counterpart, Charizard.
Quaxly
- Type: Water-type
- Classification: Duckling Pokémon
- Ability: Torrent
Along with Fuecoco, Quaxly was announced during “Pokemon Presents” 2022. The white duckling-like Pokémon is described to be earnest and tidy. But don’t let its adorable face fool you; this water-type Pokémon has powerful legs that help him swim and kick foes alike.
Sprigatito
- Type: Grass-type
- Classification: Grass Cat Pokémon
- Ability: Overgrow
Last but definitely not least is the grass-type starter, Sprigatito. Despite being a cat, this feline actually loves getting attention and tends to sulk if it doesn’t get any. Will Sprigatito evolve into a wild beast? Or will it keep its cute face? Only time will tell, but fans have been clamoring for it to stay on all fours.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: New Pokémon, New Forms, New Evolutions
With every new generation comes new Pokémon, evolutions, and regional forms, and Paldea is no different. Let’s meet the new partners who will accompany us on our journey into Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
Pawmi
- Type: Electric-type
- Classification: Mouse Pokémon
- Ability: Static/Natural Cure
Each generation has its own “Pikachu,” and it looks like Paldea has Pawmi. Similar to the Pokémon mascot, Pawmi stores electricity in its cheek. The little thing charges up by rubbing them and discharges when it gets frightened. Its Static ability is useful in the early game, allowing trainers to capitalize on paralyzed foes.
Lechonk
- Type: Normal-type
- Classification: Hog Pokémon
- Ability: Aroma Veil/Gluttony
This little fellow tugged into the heartstrings of the Pokémon Community. With its round shape and funny name, Lechonk will surely be a fan favorite for years to come. Don’t let this normal-type Pokémon’s looks fool you, though. It may look like a fat ball, but underneath its black fur is pure muscle.
Smoliv
- Type: Grass/Normal-type
- Classification: Olive Pokémon
- Ability: Early Bird
Pokémon trainers may practice caution in approaching this adorable Pokémon. It easily gets startled, and when faced with danger, it will shoot out oils from the top of its head. The sticky oils will slow any would-be attacker, allowing Smoliv to escape.
Fidough
- Type: Fairy-type
- Classification: Puppy Pokémon
- Ability: Own Tempo
The first fairy-type Pokémon to be revealed in Generation 9, its moist and smooth skin has elastic qualities akin to the dough, hence its name. Fidough is one tough cookie; when threatened, it will puff up its body to appear bigger.
Cetitan

- Classification: Terra Whale Pokémon
- Ability: Thick Fat/Slush Rush
Cetitan is one of a handful of whale Pokémon and the first of its kind since Generation 3! Its species have found their way to live in the snowy regions of Paldea, thanks to the thick layer of fat surrounding its body. This ice-type Pokémon’s abilities make it a versatile addition to any team. Thick Fat allows him to be a tank, while Slush Rush makes him a speedy Pokémon under hail storms.
Cyclizar
- Type: Dragon/Normal-type
- Classification: Mount Pokémon
- Ability: Shed Skin
With such a unique design and unique typing, Cyclizar piqued the interest of the Pokémon Community when it got announced. People of the Paldea region keep them as household pets and as transportation. Some might even think this Pokémon has ties with Paldea’s legendaries.
Grafaiai
- Type: Poison/Normal-type
- Classification: Toxic Monkey Pokémon
- Ability: Unburden/Poison Touch
It looks like Smeagle is getting some competition. This poison/normal-type spends most of its night drawing patterns on trees to mark its territory. But its paint is not only for design; it’s actually poisonous saliva!
Grafaiai might make its mark on the competitive field, thanks to the ability “Unburden,” allowing his speed to double once its held item is used.
Klawf
- Type: Rock-type
- Classification: Ambush Pokémon
- Ability: Anger Shell/Shell Armor
Be careful when walking on sand or below cliffs in Paldea; Klawf might be waiting for prey. With one snap of Klawf’s powerful claws, you can say goodbye to your journey. Despite its dangerous nature, this rock-type Pokémon’s claws are considered a delicacy in Paldea. Its Anger Shell Ability is sure to make Klawf an effective damage dealer.
Armarouge

Ceruledge
- Type: Fire/Ghost-type
- Classification: Fire Blades Pokémon
- Ability: Flash Fire
Ceruledge is the version-exclusive counterpart to Armarouge, only available in the Violet version of the game. Like Armorouge, Ceruledge uses its dual ghost/fire type to create blades made with fire and ghost energy. But unlike its Scarlet counterpart, Ceruledge utilizes sneak tactics to draft its foes.
Wiglett
- Type: Water-type
- Classification: Garden Eel Pokémon
- Ability: Gooey/Rattled
First thought as Diglett’s Paldean form, Wiglett is an entirely different species of Pokémon. But like Diglett, Wiglett only reveals a part of his body, with the rest submerged under sand. Speed seems to be Wiglett’s strongest stat as it can slow down an opponent with Gooey and boosts its own speed with the Rattled ability.
Farigiraf
- Type: Normal/Psychic-type
- Classification: Long Neck Pokémon
- Ability: Cud Chew/Armor Tail
The first new evolution to be showcased, Farigiraf, is the evolved form of Girafarig. After years since being first introduced in Generation 2, its head and tail fused, resulting in its evolved form, Farigiraf. With both brains working as one, this psychic-type Pokémon is sure to be a powerhouse. It also wields one of the two new abilities introduced in Paldea. It would be exciting to see how this fits into competitive play.
Paldean Wooper
- Type: Poison/Ground-type
- Classification: Poison Fish Pokémon
- Ability: Poison Point/Water Absorb
Wooper is the first Pokémon to be revealed with a Paldean form. This little guy swaps out its water-type for poison-type, giving us the unique dual poison/ground type. With its new typing and Water Absorb ability, Paldean Wooper can potentially be a tanky Pokémon, especially when it evolves to Quagsire.

Belibolt is the latest Paldean Pokémon to be revealed. It serves as the Electric Gym Leader, Iono’s partner. Its belly button can generate electricity by expanding its elastic body. With the new ability of Electromorphosis, Belibolt’s electric attacks are significantly boosted after getting hit.
Greavard
- Type: Ghost-type
- Classification: Ghost Dog Pokémon
- Ability: Pickup
Another good boy was added to the Pokédex! Greavard is a pure ghost-type Pokémon that will surely steal trainers’ hearts, amongst other things. If you’re traveling in Paldea, be weary when encountering Greavard, it may look friendly, but it will steal your life force when you play with it for too long. This Ghost Dog Pokémon has the “Pickup” ability, which may be a useful tool for trainers just starting out!
Paldea’s Legendary Pokémon: Koraidon & Miraidon
Koraidon
Koraidon is Pokémon Scarlet’s mascot, appearing on its front cover and all marketing material. This Pokémon reflects the classic or historical theme of Scarlet. Recent reveals show Koraidon transformed into three different forms of transportation.
Miraidon
Miraidon mirrors Pokemon Violet’s more modern look, with its almost cybernetic design and color scheme. Similar to Koraidon, Miraidon also transforms into three different forms for the play to easily traverse through Paldea’s open world.
Little is known about Koraidon and Miraidon’s types. Fans have speculated that both would be dragon types, with the second type reflecting their representative versions. Regardless, as this Generation’s legendaries, they are bound to be powerful Pokémon.
