Do you know about all the Demon Slayer ranks, and what’s the correct order of those ranks? If not, this article will be of help to you!
In Demon Slayer, the demons created by Muzan Kibutsuji are constantly hunted by the Demon Slayer Corps, a group of specialized swordsmen that have taken it upon themselves to rid the world of demons and finally defeat Muzan.
The corps themselves have undergone many changes, as they were established over a thousand years ago, but at the time of the series, the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps are faintly showcased to the readers.
For those curious about the actual ranks in the organization, we can quickly showcase them throughout this article. Still, it would be even more interesting to understand what most Demon Slayers have to endure to earn a position in the organization beforehand. So, let’s talk about what it entails to join the Demon Slayer Corps.
The Final Selection Exam:
Before admitting anyone into the organization, it is a priority to determine whether the members attempting to join the Corps have the talent and the strength to do so. This is why the final selection is so important; it hardens the new members to be able to deal with what is to come… the insatiable bloodthirst of demons.
But how are their skills tested?
Well, they have to survive 7 days in a forest that demons have infested for a long while. Once the test is finished, the new members of the Demon Slayer Corps receive their uniforms, a talking bird capable of sharing details of new missions, and of course, a Nichirin Sword, specially made to defeat demons.
Demon Slayer Ranks in Order:
Now, there are 10 different ranks inside of the Demon Slayer Corps. When someone is admitted to the Corps, they earn the rank of “Mizunoto,” which is the lowest rank. Then, the cadet can climb up in the rankings by successfully completing the missions they get.
So, what are the different Demon Slayer ranks one can achieve? The actual order of the ranks is as follows, from lowest to highest:
- Mizunoto
- Mizunoe
- Kanoto
- Kanoe
- Tsuchinoto
- Tsuchinoe
- Hinoto
- Hinoe
- Kinoto
- Kinoe
As you can see, the rank of “Mizunoto” is the lowest rank for a Demon Slayer, while the rank of “Kinoe” is the highest rank a Demon Slayer can get!
The only way to rank up inside the organization is to perform multiple missions as a Demon Slayer, which might sound simpler than they actually are, considering how strong demons can be.
What About The Hashiras?
There’s another rank inside the Demon Slayer Corps, whose members are often considered the elite of the elite and the strongest members of the group – “The Hashira.”
Hashira means “Pillar,” and as the name implies, they are the pillars of the organization, members strong enough to deal with the Lower Moons (some of Muzan’s strongest demons) quite easily while also having the strength to face the Upper Moons, the strongest demons ever to exist.
Hashiras are also known for training the lower rank members through hellish training methods that are infamous for killing a dozen corps members in the past. Tanjiro and his friends underwent this training just ahead of their final battle against Muzan and his Demon Moons.
So, how can one become a Hashira? Is there any special requirement? As a matter of fact, there is!
To become a Hashira, one must kill over 50 demons across multiple missions. Or, a demon slayer can achieve the Hashira rank if they manage to slay a demon belonging to the Twelve Demon Moons, both the Lower Moons and the Upper Moons.
What is Tsuguko?
There’s also a rank known as “Tsuguko,” which can be described as the successor of a Hashira once they die or are forced to retire.
A Tsuguko can either apply to become a Hashira or be chosen by another Hashira as their successor. Often, a Tsuguko is selected by a Hashira instead of them directly applying for the position, although there are some exceptions.
There are only two known Tsuguko in the Demon Slayer series – one is Kanao Tsuyuri, who is the Tsuguko of the Flower Hashira, Shinobu Kocho, and Mitsuri Kanroji, the current Love Hashira, who used to be the Tsuguko of Kyojuro Rengoku, the former Flame Hashira.
Who Are the Kakushi?
Now, let’s talk about the “Kakushi.” The Kakushi is a specific group inside the Demon Slayer corps that cannot fight, as they don’t have the talent to wield breathing techniques or use Nichirin swords.
They, however, support demon slayers in many ways.
For instance, they can rescue them when they are gravely injured and need emergency treatment or procure items they might need to complete their missions. They can also gather information about specific demons or weird situations that might involve one.
Overall, they can be described as the caretakers of the Demon Slayers, and as shown with the main characters as they were taken care of in the House of the Butterfly, they can play an essential role in their victory.
What About The Ubuyashiki Family?
The Ubuyashiki family is the one who leads the Demon Slayer Corps, and every member of the Corps reports to the current head of the family. For the major part of the story, it was Kagaya Ubayishiki at the helm of the Corps, the current leader of the organization and the person all Hashiras respect the most.
We also have Amane Ubayishiki, Kagaya’s caretaker and loving wife. She’s also the proud mother of Hinaki, Nichika, Kanata, and Kiriya, and she’s done her best to prepare them for the fight against Muzan.
The Ubuyashiki family is also wealthy enough and has enough connections to allow the demon slayers to work independently and receive a decent salary that allows them to travel around without worrying about food or a ceiling.
Conclusion
Now that you have a solid idea of what the Demon Slayer Corps are like and how the internal system was structured, you might have a better time enjoying the manga or anime, even more considering that this information is only shared scarcely. You might have never gotten to know all of this if you had only watched the series or read the manga without paying much attention to how the in-universe world functions.
Just make sure not to underestimate the low-ranking demon slayers since even the actual Hashiras worked hard from the bottom to reach their place. Well, at least most of them did, except for the Mist Hashira and the Stone Hashira, who managed to reach their rank in only three months.
