Chainsaw Man manga, written by Tatsuki Fujimoto, is one of the most thrilling series to come out in recent times. It’s fast-paced and has a fantastic plot, a great story, and several memorable characters. So, it’s no wonder that it has become a best-selling manga series in a short time!
The manga series is quite popular, so it’s no surprise that it’s about to get an anime adaptation. The Chainsaw Man anime is releasing in October 2022, so if you are wondering about all the Chainsaw Man arcs, I’ve got you covered.
Unlike most popular manga or anime, this shonen series doesn’t have a ton of chapters and volumes to cover. Its story is conveniently divided into multiple parts, Part 1 ended in 2020, and Part 2 began not long ago.
If you want to read the manga before you start watching the anime, you should have a look at all the arcs that make up the story. As I said, it’s a fast-paced series, so you won’t have to wait a long time and read several chapters before you start seeing some gore and action.
Chainsaw Man Manga Arcs in Order:
The first chapter of Chainsaw Man was released in December 2018, and the last chapter of Part 1 of the story was released in December 2020. A total of 97 chapters in Part 1 were collected in 11 volumes.
Part 2 of the story began with manga chapter 98, which was released in July 2022!
The story follows Denji, an impoverished young man with loads of debt to pay off. One day, he comes across a dog-like devil and saves it. He names it Pochita, and it becomes his friend. Using his pet devil’s abilities, he gets a gig of hunting demons for the Yakuza to pay off his debts.
However, the Yakuza betrays him, and Denji finds himself on the brink of death. Fortunately, Pochita sacrifices himself to merge with Denji and revives him. On top of being back from the dead, Denji now has the power of Chainsaw Devil. He quickly uses his new abilities to dispatch all his enemies within the blink of an eye.
The Public Safety Division, an organization that hunts the devils, finds Denji amidst the massacre. They offer him to become an official devil hunter and work for them. Denji accepts, and his life seems to be changing for the good, or does it?!
Apart from the insane action, all the blood and gore, and comedy, there are also several emotional moments in the story. All Chainsaw Man Arcs in Order:
1. Intro Arc
The story’s first arc introduces us to most of the main characters. Denji meets Pochita, a chainsaw devil, and they both become good friends after he saves its life. After getting betrayed, Denji finds himself on the brink of death. Pochita decides to return the favor by saving Denji’s life.
So, he merges with Denji’s dead body and becomes his heart. In doing so, he not only revives Denji but also grants him the powers of the Chainsaw Devil, and they both become Chainsaw Man!
2. Bat Devil Arc
At the end of the first arc, we are introduced to one of the best characters in the story, Power. She’s selfish and difficult to work with, and we get a glimpse of her personality in the Bat Devil Arc.
Denji is teamed up with Power, and she reveals that a Devil has kidnaped her cat. Before she could rescue her cat, Makima recruited her. So Power asks Denji to help her save her cat, and she will allow him to touch her boobs in exchange for his help. Hearing this, Denji is ready to jump into action!
However, Power betrays him and presents him to the Bat Devil in exchange for the cat. But Bat Devil renegades on the deal and eats both the cat and Power. Now it’s up to Denji to transform into Chainsaw Man, fight the Bat Devil, and save Power!
3. Eternity Devil Arc
The Eternity Devil arc is the third arc of Part 1 of Chainsaw Man and focuses on Eternity Devil, as the name suggests!
The Special Division 4 of the Public Safety Devil Hunters is tasked with finding and retrieving a piece of the elusive Gun Devil. However, when they reach the spot, they find the Eternity Devil instead of the Gun Devil. The Eternity Devil traps all the devil hunters in an endless loop within the hotel for 3 whole days, while it gets stronger by feeding on their fears.
4. Katana Man Arc
The fourth arc of Chainsaw Man starts with a sudden assault on the Special Division as most of its members are killed. Even Makima is attacked and supposedly killed by unknown assailants on a train.
While Denji and his teammates are at a restaurant enjoying a meal, Katana Man attacks him and shoots him in the head. He happens to be the son of the mob boss that Denji kills in the first arc. A fight breaks out between Katana Man and the rest of the squad. But of course, Denji is not precisely dead as he soon returns in his Chainsaw Man form and fights Katana Man and his accomplices in a bloody battle!
This arc shows why Chainsaw Man is one of the best stories to read. It completely upends several shonen tropes as it makes the readers go through conflicting emotions because of the fate that awaits certain characters.
5. Bomb Girl Arc
Denji would love to live a peaceful life while having a loving girlfriend. But his life until now has mistreated him at every turn.
So, when Denji meets Reze, a sweet girl who shows interest in him, Denji finds himself falling for her. However, the story turns dark when it’s revealed that Reze is the Bomb Devil hybrid and a Russian assassin who’s here to kill Denji.
Once again, our boy Denji gets betrayed when he opens his heart to someone. But by the end of the arc, it’s shown that Reze also has some affection for Denji. However, nothing comes out of this realization because, by the end of the arc, Makima shows up and kills Reze!
6. Internation Assassin Arc
This arc is one of the best Chainsaw Man arcs, as the story really ramps up from here! As Denji’s existence becomes known worldwide, international assassins and devil hunters appear to kill him.
So many new characters and devils are introduced in the story, including fan-favorite characters like Quanxi and Santa Clause. Makima tries to save Denji from the onslaught of the assassins, but the situation is quite dire, and Denji’s life is really in danger this time as several characters end up dead.
Moreover, this is the arc where we start noticing that Makima might have some ulterior motives as several mysteries are unraveled.
7. Gun Devil Arc
This seventh arc of Chainsaw Man starts with the aftermath of everything that went down in the previous arc. Things are different, and character dynamics have changed quite a bit.
The Public Safety Devil Hunters are finally going after the Gun Devil, but Makima reveals to Denji, Power, and Aki that Gun Devil has already been defeated and confined. She also states that several countries and countless devils are in possession of Gun Devil’s body parts.
It’s revealed that Makima is the Control Devil and the President of the United States makes a deal with the Gun Devil to kill Makima in exchange for one-year lifespans of all US citizens.
8. Control Devil Arc
The final arc of Part 1 of Chainsaw Man manga, the Control Devil arc, is the most explosive arc of the story as things have gone horribly wrong with our main characters.
It is revealed that Makima is the main antagonist of the story, and she is the one behind most of the events that happened in the story. The arc features one battle after another, and we even see why all the devils fear the Chainsaw Devil.
Denji finally transforms into the ultimate Chainsaw Devil, battles against several other devils, and dispatches them easily.
The arc is worthy of being the final arc of Part 1 because all the events that happened from the beginning culminate in the finale while also setting up what to expect from the story’s future!
9. War Devil Arc
The War Devil arc is one of the recent Chainsaw Man arcs and the first arc of Part 2 of the manga, which began in July 2022.
This arc focuses on high schooler Asa Mitaka, who becomes the host of the War Devil. The devil instructs her to go after Chainsaw Man and kill him to gain access to the nuclear weapons devil because Pochita had devoured the Nuclear Weapons Devil at some point in the past. In doing so, it rid the world of its existence along with the existence of any nuclear weapons.
