Like it or not, the live-action version of Death Note 2 is apparently in the works and is confirmed for a Netflix release pretty soon!
Death Note is one of the most popular anime franchise in the world, and anyone who’s into anime and manga would have watched the series at least once. Apparently, it’s so popular that it is the first recommendation to people who want to start watching anime and it was my first anime as well. So, when Netflix announced that they were working on a live-action movie, everyone was clearly excited and hyped for it.
However, once the movie was released, it divided the fans apart into two different groups. One group was comprised of people who already had watched the anime or read the manga and knew the story beforehand and the other group was the one who had never heard about the show. Clearly, the first group didn’t like it at all, while the latter really liked the movie, even loved it to an extent.
The failure and a lackluster response from long-time Death Note fans was because of the white-washing of the characters and a pretty lose adaptation, so the announcement of Death Note 2 has generated mixed reaction.
What to Expect from Death Note 2?
People familiar with the source material will clearly wonder if the sequel is going to be faithful to the story or go in a different direction considering how different the characterizations were in the first part.
Comicbook.com has shared some amazing ideas on what to expect from the sequel movie and it does look good! The article suggests that they take the safe route and base the story on the source material, but there’s also an anthology angle that the makers can take which sounds way more fun and interesting.
Since the first movie was criticized for being whitewashed and taking liberties with the source material, it would seem like a good idea to further advance these liberties and do something completely unique!
I really like the idea of the Death Note 2 movie starting with the death note falling into a completely different location and coming into possession of a new character. This would give the story an anthology angle which could be explored later on. If you’ve watched the first movie, then you’ll know that the death note had previous owners as well, apart from Light. This is pretty evident from various writings in different languages in the book. So, that’s something new and not taken from the original source material, which means that giving the book to a new character in the sequel might not be such a bad idea at all.
Death Note 2 Release Date:
There’s no official release date set for the sequel movie as it’s still in the works, but we are probably looking at a late 2019 release date if everything goes smoothly. Although, I didn’t enjoy the first movie because I subconsciously compared it to the anime, I am looking forward to the sequel to see which direction the makers are taking the franchise to.
