Learning about a new show featuring a slime as a main character might have sounded like a boring thing to watch, like I did initially; but as soon as you watch the first episode, you’ll be hooked! That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is amazing and I can’t recommend it enough to everyone.
We see that Satoru Mikami is a 37-year old guy, who’s never been in a relationship in his life, suddenly gets stabbed to death while protecting his junior. He later wakes up in a fantasy world and finds himself in a cave, but he soon discovers that he’s no longer human but a slime. Because he had certain wishes while he was dying, he got a number of unique skills in this new world. Moreover, while he’s in the cave, he befriends a legendary dragon who gives him the name “Rimuru” and teaches him “magic perception” skill so that the slime can see. And thus begins the slime’s journey into a new world filled with monsters like goblins, orcs, ogres, lizardmen and even Demon Lords.
If you’ve not watched the show yet, then you should definitely watch it as the animation is stunning, it’s got great story and even greater characters and is filled with action and comedy. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that it is the “best isekai anime of 2018”.

A new fantasy world with an overpowered main character with dozens of followers is the premise of Overlord as well which makes it the most similar anime. However, unlike Rimuru Tempest who was reincarnated in a fantasy world after his death, Ainz Ooal Gown remained in the game he was playing even after the servers shut down.
The story is amazing as even after the game was supposed to shut down, it kept running as Ainz was still conscious and all the non-playing characters had developed their own personalities. With this new development, Ainz orders his servant to investigate the situation and starts exploring the new world in hopes of bringing it all under his control!
2. In Another World with My Smartphone
I have not read the manga or the light novel of this show and only watched the anime, that lasted just one season. And what I can say from that is it may be a good isekai anime, but is not the very best!
After Touya Mochizuki was accidentally killed, God reincarnated him in a fantasy world and was allowed to take his smartphone with him as well. After being born in the new world, he found out that God was pretty generous with him as his body was not only superior in strength, but he also possessed powerful magical abilities. He can learn almost all kinds of spells and uses it to defeat the strongest monsters with ease. Don’t expect a ton of action like in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime going in; but if you like feel-good anime, then this is worth a watch!
3. How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord?
This particular anime was released last year and has become one of the best ecchi anime in just one season! The story features a shut-in gamer, Takuma Sakamoto, who is the strongest player in the MMORPG, Cross Reverie, and is known as the Demon King Diablo.
However, he is summoned to another world resembling that of Cross Reverie and his appearance also resembles to his game avatar, Diablo. He is summoned by two girls, a petite Pantherian and a busty Elf, and as they cast an Enslavement spell on Diablo to make him their slave, the spell is reflected due to his “magic reflect” ability and the two girls become his slaves instead. Although he is as strong as he was in the game, he is a shut-in with no social skills and no knowledge of how to talk to girls. So, he adopts his Demon King persona to hide the awkwardness while figuring out a way to release the girls from the enslavement!
4. Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?
Although this particular title doesn’t fit in the isekai genre, but it is set in a fantasy world that is similar to the one That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime is set in! Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?, or “DanMachi” for short, has the main character who’s got a unique ability of his own much like Rimuru Tempest does. Moreover, just like Rimuru gains a powerful ally in the beginning in the form of the Storm Dragon Veldora, Bell Cranel gains the support of the Goddess Hestia!
Bell Cranel is a young man who hopes to become the greatest adventurer in the world and after meeting with the Goddess Hestia, and her support, he embarks on a quest to explore the monster-filled catacombs, known as Dungeons, where death lurks around at every corner.
5. Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody
If you are looking for anime similar to That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, then this particular title is possibly the closest one! Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody features a similar plot, is set in a fantasy world and has an overpowered main character.
The anime features Ichirou Suzuki, who’s a programmer in his thirties. After getting tired from working, he goes to sleep only to wake up in a fantasy world comprised of all the games that he’s been debugging in the real world. Moreover, he has become a younger version of himself and he now goes by the name of Satou, a nickname he used while debugging the games. Before Satou can fully grasp what’s happening, he is attacked by an army of Lizardmen. He retaliates by casting a powerful spell, effectively wiping out the army, and his level is boosted to 310 that maximizes all his other stats. So, he becomes an adventurer, armed with a number of skills, and sets out to explore this new fantasy world!
6. KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World!
Kazuma Satou, a high school student, dies a pretty laughable death and finds himself in front of the Goddess Aqua who gives him two options – either go to heaven or get reincarnated in a new fantasy world. She also tells him that he can choose anything to aid him in his quest, so he chooses the reincarnation option and choose the Goddess herself to accompany him. But what he doesn’t know, but later finds out, is that Aqua is completely useless!
The anime show is similar in the way that it’s an isekai anime with the main character being reincarnated in a new world after his death. However, it’s devoid of any action that Rimuru Tempest finds himself in on many occasions and is essential a slice-of-life anime show filled with all the clichés and tropes of the isekai genre.
