One of the biggest mysteries in Jujutsu Kaisen is why Sukuna seems so invested in Megumi Fushiguro. Ever since Sukuna first laid eyes on Megumi, he appeared to have some kind of sinister plan involving him.
As it turns out, Sukuna’s interest in Megumi stems from the latter’s exceptional Ten Shadows Technique, a technique that can rival the Gojo clan’s Limitless technique. The anime and manga have subtly suggested that Sukuna wishes for Megumi to master this technique and serve as his new vessel.
Although Yuji Itadori is Sukuna’s vessel, he serves more as a cage than a vessel, leaving Sukuna feeling constricted as he can’t gain full control over Yuji’s body for some reason!
If you are an anime-only fan who hasn’t read the manga, you must be curious to know exactly what Sukuna plans to do with Megumi Fushiguro. In this article, we will discuss why Sukuna likes Megumi, what his plans are, and whether he accomplishes all his goals or not! So beware, as we are now entering into the SPOILERS territory!
Geke Akutami recently revealed why Sukuna is interested in Megumi, as he force-fed Megumi one of his fingers and changed vessels. He is no longer within Yuji’s body but now possesses Megumi’s body! With Sukuna now possessing Megumi, the stakes are higher than ever. Join us as we delve into Sukuna’s plans for Megumi, why Yuji is too limiting for him, and what we think might happen in the future.
Did Sukuna Take Over Megumi Fushiguro?
Yes, Sukuna has finally succeeded in possessing Megumi Fushiguro, as revealed in chapter 212 of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. It turns out that he had intended to do this ever since he made the Binding Vow with Yuji earlier in the series.
Sukuna’s curiosity towards Megumi became evident during their first encounter in the Cursed Womb arc. Even when Sukuna wasn’t fully engaged in the fight, he noticed Megumi’s power restraint and was intrigued by his Ten Shadows cursed technique.
Later, a conversation between Satoru Gojo and Megumi Fushiguro shed light on his latent abilities. Gojo mentioned that a Ten Shadows technique user and a Limitless technique user clashed in the past, suggesting that Megumi is capable of becoming as powerful as Gojo himself. This revelation informed Megumi of his true potential, which he had been unaware of, although he was not convinced that he could surpass Satoru Gojo.
Fans can always tell that Sukuna’s interest in Megumi seems to be focused on his technique rather than Megumi as a person. In the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings arc, Megumi’s fight with the Cursed Womb showcased his growth and use of his domain for the first time.
Sukuna was pleased with Megumi’s progress, and during Mahoraga’s exorcism ritual, he acknowledged that the only way to defeat Mahoraga, a powerful Shikigami created by the Ten Shadows technique, was to utilize his Domain Expansion.
Finally, in chapter 212 of the manga, Sukuna used the Binding Vow he made at the beginning of the series with Yuji Itadori to take over Megumi’s body. If you recall, this particular Binding Vow enables Sukuna to take over Yuji’s body for one minute whenever he says a “keyword.”
He also made it a condition that he wouldn’t kill anyone during this time only if Yuji forgot about the vow after it was made!
During this one minute, Sukuna concentrated all his consciousness, soul, and power into Yuji’s little finger, which he then forcefully fed to Megumi. This allowed Sukuna to take control of Megumi’s body and finally be free of Yuji.
Why is Sukuna Interested in Megumi?
We might not know what Sukuna plans to do now that he’s possessing Megumi, but it’s quite possible that he wanted to be in possession of Megumi’s Ten Shadows technique to get rid of Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer in the world right now. Another popular theory suggests that Sukuna wants to create an extremely powerful Shikigami through the technique, which he can then transfer his soul into.
Sukuna’s journey has been quite the roller-coaster since Yuji Itadori first consumed his finger. At first, he was ecstatic to finally be alive again in a fleshly body, but little did he expect that Yuji’s self-control would be so formidable.
Even after reincarnating inside Yuji’s body, Sukuna faced an ongoing threat – the possibility of Yuji devouring all of his fingers and having Satoru Gojo potentially put an end to him once and for all. To avoid this, Sukuna used Megumi Fushiguro in his revival process.
Megumi’s Ten Shadows technique is a signature technique of the Zenin Clan. This allows him to manifest up to 10 Shikigami, each creature with unique abilities. When one Shikigami is destroyed, its cursed energy is transferred to the surviving ones, making them even stronger.
The theory is that Sukuna wants to form a contract with Megumi and become his new Shikigami. By destroying the other Shikigami, Sukuna could potentially gain a complete body. This body would be even more powerful, having absorbed the cursed energy from the other Shikigami, too.
But based on the current events in the manga, it’s pretty evident that Satoru Gojo would have destroyed Sukuna if he hadn’t been in possession of Megumi’s body. The only reason Gojo and Sukuna can fight on an equal footing is because of Sukuna’s insane mastery over the Ten Shadows technique that lets him counter Gojo’s highly unpredictable yet badass battle prowess!
But we still have to see who comes out on top as the battle between Ryomen Sukuna, the King of Curses, and Satoru Gojo, the strongest sorcerer today, is still ongoing, with no clear winner in sight!
Yuji Is a “Cage” Instead of a “Vessel”
One of the very first things we learn in Jujutsu Kaisen is that if Yuji eats all 20 of Sukuna’s fingers, it’s very likely that Sukuna will take complete control of his body.
Of course, the main cast of Jujutsu Kaisen wants to help him achieve this because the only way to end Sukuna is to have all his power concentrated within one vessel. If that vessel is destroyed, Sukuna will cease to exist for good.
Satoru Gojo has stated that the plan is to have Yuji eat all the fingers and then have Sukuna fight Gojo. While this would be a close fight, Gojo believes that he would still win.
But we don’t know that for sure, and Sukuna doesn’t seem like the type of guy to sell himself short. Does he really believe Gojo’ll thoroughly defeat him? That may have been the case, as Sukuna is not an idiot; he’s a highly intelligent being.
Is that why he decided to abandon his vessel, Yuji Itadori, whose formidable will prevents Sukuna from taking control of his body and switching to Megumi Fushiguro’s body?
It turns out that Yuji’s willpower and conviction are strong enough to limit what Sukuna can and can’t do. Sukuna thinks Yuji might take back control long enough to cause irreversible damage.
Sukuna himself stated that Yuji is a cage, not a vessel, so it makes sense that he’d want to be rid of him and take control of Megumi and gain access to not only a proper vessel that he can fully control but also gain access to one of the strongest cursed techniques in existence.
Conclusion
To summarize, Sukuna’s interest in Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen stems from the latter’s powerful Ten Shadows Technique.
With Sukuna now possessing Megumi’s body, the stakes have risen, and the series is set for intense confrontations between the characters. As it stands now, the fate of Sukuna, Yuji, and Megumi remains uncertain. With Sukuna being the wildcard that he is, we can only theorize about how our main cast can possibly turn the tides in their favor.
