After major titles like Naruto and Bleach concluded, fans were anxious about the big shoes left to fill.
Their prayers were heard when Jujutsu Kaisen was released. Just like that, after only a year of serialization, Jujutsu Kaisen TV anime was announced, and here we are in 2023, watching the second season.
But what made Jujutsu Kaisen so popular?
Is it the power system or the curiosity of the viewers looking for something new?
There can be a lot of aspects, but nothing can bring a story to bloom like a cast of good characters. Not only do these characters have unique designs, but they also have different techniques within the power system, highly customizable depending on the type of characters.
And in this article, we will be talking about the best Jujutsu Kaisen characters!
However, a question arises, what makes a character the best of them all?
You might say it’s the power or their charming personalities. While all these factors are valid, what differentiates the best from the good ones is the character’s impact on the story, regardless of its strength or popularity. Let me know what you think.
With that said, let’s dive right into the list featuring the best characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen series.
Best Jujutsu Kaisen Characters in 2023
27. Shoko Ieiri
Shoko Ieiri is the only sorcerer who can use the Reverse Cursed Technique to heal others, a feat even Satoru Gojo can’t achieve. As the doctor of Tokyo Jujutsu High, Shoko’s presence is invaluable.
She is Gojo and Geto’s classmate, but unlike them, she is very laid-back even in the most life-threatening situations. For example, meeting the rogue Geto, talking to him about his evil deeds, and then calling Gojo in front of him without caring about her life; is something only Shoko can do. She likes to stay out of unnecessary drama.
Although she showed emotions occasionally, she was upset with Yuji’s death, but seeing Satoru losing his cool, she returned to her nonchalant self.
26. Mei Mei
“Whose side? I’m on the side with money, of course. There’s no value in something that can’t be bought… since you can’t exchange that for money.” – Mei Mei
The quote summarises Mei Mei pretty well; however, there’s an undertone in the term value. If you follow her actions very closely, anyone who doesn’t know how to value someone or something, that individual is her natural enemy, be it a human or a cursed spirit.
But, in the end, only money can move this Grade 1 sorcerer, a realist, you might say. Gojo and Geto were her juniors in their Jujutsu High School days.
Unlike most sorcerers, Mei Mei is highly skilled in long-range attacks, especially with her cursed technique – Black Bird Manipulation, where she can share the bird’s vision to monitor anything going on at long distances.
Additionally, she can use those birds to attack by sharing her cursed energy and making these fragile beings strong enough to kill a cursed spirit, going as far as exorcising a special-grade cursed spirit.
25. Kasumi Miwa
In Jujutsu Kaisen, Kasumi Miwa makes her way into the list of the best characters because she represents us, the viewers.
As a die-hard fan of Satoru Gojo, Miwa is constantly in awe of Gojo. Miwa was among the students of Kyoto Jujutsu High who were ordered to kill Yuji by Yoshinobu Gakuganji, the principal. Although she went ahead to execute the order, being the kind-hearted girl she is, Miwa made sure to apologize for her actions.
Growing up in a poor household, Miwa’s only reason for becoming a Jujutsu Sorcerer is to earn money to give her two younger brothers a better life. Despite not being as gifted as her friends, Miwa narrows those gaps by working harder than anyone else. She combines basic cursed techniques with her swordplay to increase its effectiveness.
24. Riko Amanai
Riko Amanai is a high school student who was chosen to be the Star Plasma Vessel for Master Tengen. Although she appears in the story briefly, she is definitely the one who turned Gojo and Geto’s life upside down, for better or worse.
If not for the escort mission, Gojo wouldn’t have faced Toji, awakened his Limitless Cursed Technique, and become the strongest sorcerer alive. Witnessing Riko’s death being celebrated changed Geto and pushed him to take the route of erasing the non-sorcerers for good.
She stands at the center of an event that triggered the chaos in the jujutsu world. Again, for better or worse. Only time will tell.
As a human, Riko was cheerful yet aggressive at times. Growing up, Riko lost her parents at the age of four, after which Misato Kuroi took care of her.
23. Yuki Tsukumo
“What type of girls do you like?”– Yuki Tsukumo
If this sounds familiar, it is; because Yuki Tsukumo is the one who brought Aoi Todo into the world of Jujutsu to sate a grade schooler’s hunger for power, who can easily knock down haughty high schoolers. That’s where Aoi picked up the uniquely weird ice-breaker.
Although she might look clumsy and playful, she is one of the four special-grade sorcerers who work independently due to the conflict of ideas with the jujutsu higher-ups.
“I don’t want to exorcise curses after they appear. I want a world where curses don’t even exist.” – Yuki Tsukumo.
The quote shows how her ideals clash with the higher-ups and how she is as an individual. It’s also worth mentioning that she said this during her conversation with Geto, who was at his lowest at that moment.
It was during this conversation that Yuki mentioned erasing all non-sorcerers as a way, but she isn’t crazy enough to do that. This triggered Geto to choose a path he might not have chosen if not for the wrong conversation at the wrong time.
Yuki has a vital role in the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident Arc, so you should either wait for the third season or read the manga.
22. Mai Zenin
Mai Zenin is the twin of Maki Zenin. Unlike Maki, she isn’t physically strong but has more cursed energy than her, but not enough to use the cursed techniques effectively. She joins the ranks of Maki as another product of misogyny in the almighty Zenin Clan.
Although Mai has a rude personality, she blames it all on Maki for becoming a sorcerer, because of which Mai was forced to become a sorcerer as well.
Despite all that, Mai looks up to Maki for her strong-headedness, which is also the reason for her envy.
One of Mai’s abilities is to construct anything from nothing, but the problem is the severe stress this has on her body.
21. Hanami
Hanami is a special-grade cursed spirit, and he was born from mankind’s fear of natural disasters. His ultimate goal is to eradicate humanity for the suffering they have brought to the ever-giving nature.
After saving Jogo from Gojo and defeating Inumaki, Megumi, Maki, and Noritoshi, Hanami grew even more as a cursed spirit and found joy in fighting. But it was also during these battles he helped Yuji mature into a far superior Jujutsu Sorcerer who can use Black Flash like a walk in the park.
He has yet to play a role in the Shibuya Incident Arc, so keep an eye on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2.
20. Yoshinobu Gakuganji
Yoshinobu Gakuganji is the principal of Kyoto Jujutsu High and likes to follow old traditions. Because Gojo put a stay on Yuji’s execution, he ordered Kyoto’s students to kill Yuji during the Kyoto Goodwill Event, assuring he would cover it up for the greater good – to stop Sukuna.
Gakuganji represents the corrupted sorcery world that Gojo is eager to take down.
As one of the higher-ups of the Jujutsu world, he is manipulative and deceptive. Although he doesn’t seem like it, he cares about the safety and well-being of the students more than anything.
He uses the sound from a guitar to amplify the sound waves in the form of cursed energy. Gakuganji has yet to play vital roles throughout the story; without spoiling anything, I would ask you to keep an eye on the baldy.
19. Noritoshi Kamo
Noritoshi Kamo is a third-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High. After he was separated from his mother by the Kamo Clan to become a sorcerer as their next heir, Noritoshi grew up as a people pleaser who kept duties ahead of people’s lives. At a point, he lost himself, acting as a mere puppet of the Kamo Clan.
His only goal is to become influential in the Kamo Clan to bring back his mother and reunite with her. Among his other allies at Kyoto Jujutsu High, Noritoshi was the one who followed Yuji’s execution order without any hesitation.
He even tells Megumi that it is his own will and thinks his actions are justified as the eldest son of the Kamo Clan.
Although he lacks self-identity as a human, Noritoshi’s cursed technique is blood manipulation; not only can he manipulate blood outside his body, but he can also increase his body temperature and pulse rate to gain enhanced physical abilities. In terms of power, Noritoshi is a worthy heir of the Kamo Clan.
Even though his character development is negligible initially, the wheels will start moving with the Shibuya Incident Arc.
18. Jogo
Jogo is a special-grade cursed spirit, but he is more human than anyone of them. Jogo believes that cursed spirits born from the true nature of humankind deserve to be in place of humans, enjoying freedom on earth.
To realize this goal, Jogo is always ready to sacrifice himself if it means cursed spirits can replace humans. Even though he is more intelligent than most cursed spirits, Jogo’s short temper and arrogance have led him to his doom several times; a classic example being when he was on the verge of getting killed by Gojo. But thanks to Hanami, he escaped his death.
All these emotions and pride as a cursed spirit made him a mirror self of an average human being in the modern era. As an antagonist, Jogo plays a vital role in connecting the dots of the storyline, which are often unnoticed.
17. Masamichi Yaga
Masamichi Yaga is one of the major supporting characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. From mentoring difficult personalities like Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto to creating Panda, a self-sustaining cursed corpse with its own emotions, Yaga has guided the next generation of jujutsu sorcerers in the right direction, with exceptions.
Besides being the most skilled cursed corpse user, Yaga is earnest and kind. Rather than listening to the corrupted higher-ups of the sorcerer world, Yaga decided to stop the execution of Yuta and Yuji, which helped them to find their own path.
After becoming the principal of Tokyo Jujutsu High, Yaga’s priority has always been to nurture these young talents for a bright future.
16. Junpei Yoshino
Junpei Yoshino is a high school student. He got bullied so much that he didn’t attend high school after the first year.
When Mahito killed the bullies, Junpei felt pleased by their deaths. Following that, one event after the other, Mahito manipulates Junpei to the point of no return, ultimately losing his life as a transfigured human.
Besides all this, Junpei finally found a friend in Yuji; his mental state was also improving, but his shortsightedness ended the slim chance.
Junpei is a character that the fandom wanted to see on the regular roster of Jujutsu Kaisen characters. That’s how much impact he left on us with just a couple of episodes. If that doesn’t make him one of the best characters, I don’t know what will.
15. Yuta Okkotsu
Yuta Okkotsu is the strongest sorcerer, second only to Satoru Gojo. He was the timidest person in the entire cast of Jujutsu Kaisen, but with time, he became more social, thanks to Maki, Panda, and Inumaki.
His cursed energy reserve is endless, with more cursed energy than the strongest sorcerer alive, i.e., Satoru Gojo. As if that wasn’t enough, he can copy techniques, from the simple ones to the genetically inherited techniques like Inumaki’s cursed speech.
His primary weapon is a sword. During his battle, he is accompanied by Rika, a cursed spirit dubbed the Queen of Curses.
Yuta Okkotsu is one of the only four special-grade sorcerers recognized by Jujutsu High. As a human, Yuta has grown to deal with difficult personalities but is still the old Yuta, a warm-hearted individual around his friends.
This was just the tip of the iceberg. Yuta Okkotsu is such a complete character that many wish for him to be the main protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen. And, understandably so.
14. Panda
“I’m a panda. I don’t understand human language.” – Panda
Yes, Panda says that when he wants to get out of a troublesome situation. He might look like a real panda, but in reality, Panda is an Abrupt-Mutated Cursed Corpse created by Tokyo Jujutsu High principal Masamichi Yaga. With three cores inside him, Panda can shapeshift at will.
Panda’s behavior is unmatched; just like a real panda, he is laid back and doesn’t like to waste energy. For that, he is adored by everyone.
As a senior, Panda is always looking out for his juniors. That should be enough to make him the best character, considering how a speaking panda can be this humorous.
13. Toge Inumaki
If you hear him talking about food all the time, it doesn’t mean he is trying to order those foods; it’s his way of communicating.
Toge Inumaki is a cursed speech user, which means anybody who is the target of his cursed energy-infused commands will have to obey those commands.
However, the more complex the command, the more rebound Inumaki has to suffer. That’s why he has to use his cursed technique carefully. He has developed a unique way of speaking to avoid causing harm to the people he cares for.
As an avid mukbang viewer, Inumaki uses food names to communicate with his friends, and although it takes around half a year to get used to it, everyone is happy enough to go along with that. Some examples are Salmon, Fish Flakes, Mustard Leaf, Tuna, etc. He even curses using his food language.
His capability as a jujutsu sorcerer and his unique way of speaking make him one of the best Jujutsu Kaisen characters.
12. Nobara Kugisaki
Nobara Kugisaki completes the protagonistic trio. She isn’t a people pleaser; her inflexible nature creates tension between anyone she comes across.
She takes pride in being true to herself. Though she was forced to change and mold in a way others wanted, Nobara never gave in and grew up independent and strong.
Unlike Yuji, who finds it hard to control his cursed energy, Nobara can manipulate it at will. She uses hammers and nails as her primary weapon and infuses them with her cursed energy to attack her opponents.
You shouldn’t get on her wrong side because she has expertise in the straw doll technique, which you might know as a voodoo doll.
That said, at the end of the day, she can be extremely caring and understanding to the ones close to her, making her one of the best characters to look forward to.
11. Maki Zenin
Maki is another outcast of the renowned Zenin Family. She is one of the many mistreated or outcasts of the big three clans of the sorcery world. Even though she has nearly no cursed energy because of the Hevanely Restrictions, she is blessed with superhuman strength.
For the anime-only viewers, I won’t spoil it, but keep your eyes on Maki. She might be the dark horse you were looking for.
That said, what makes Maki one of the most important characters of Jujutsu Kaisen is the fact that other female characters like her sister Mai and Nobara look up to her not only as a strong sorcerer but also as a strong-headed individual who doesn’t let the past affect her present.
As someone who has been through many hardships since childhood, Maki is caring and kind to her friends.
10. Toji Fushiguro
Toji Fushiguro is THE DADDY of Jujutsu Kaisen. Born with no cursed energy, Toji didn’t find a place in the egoistic Zenin clan that worships cursed techniques above everything else. He took his wife’s surname (Fushiguro) after marriage.
If not for the mistreatment, Toji would have become a sorcerer, and he would have become the king of sorcerers, maybe second to Satoru Gojo.
Due to heavenly restrictions similar to Maki, Toji doesn’t have an ounce of cursed energy, but his physical prowess outshines Gojo.
As a human, Toji detested the sorcerers, but after marriage, he became a decent human until his wife died.
After that, he resumed his life as the Sorcerer Killer before getting killed by Gojo following the Star Plasma Vessel assassination.
However, his last words to Gojo are about Megumi, showing that even if he acts cold, he would have been a different person; if acknowledged for who he was.
9. Kento Nanami
Working overtime, talking too much, and wasting energy on unnecessary tasks isn’t something you would see Kento Nanami do. As a former salaryman, Nanami left his job because his efforts weren’t appreciated enough.
However, a small bow of thankfulness was enough to switch his career from a salaryman to a sorcerer. He finds pleasure in minute gestures we often overlook and take for granted.
Similarly, he likes to spend quality time alone with home-cooked food and a can of beer. Although he has graduated from Tokyo Jujutsu High as Gojo’s junior, Nanami quit being a sorcerer after one of his friends gets killed during a mission.
You might think, how can Nanami be one of the best Jujutsu Kaisen characters?
Besides being such a simple human at heart, Nanami’s prowess as a sorcerer is unmatched, even acknowledged by the strongest sorcerer himself. That’s also why Gojo left Yuji under Nanami’s supervision to guide Yuji and hone his skills as a sorcerer.
Good protagonists make a story look good, but a better supporting character puts that cherry on top.
8. Aoi Todo
“What type of girls do you like?” – Aoi Todo
That’s how Aoi Todo likes to start a conversation with friends and even strangers. It’s his way of evaluating people. Depending on the answer, you will get on his good or bad side.
It doesn’t just end there; his life revolves around a pop idol whom he refers to as Takada-chan, be it his routine or duty as a sorcerer. If there’s an event or broadcast of Takada-chan, Todo prioritizes the event before anything. Even the principal doesn’t have the power to change his mind.
That’s the fun side of Aoi. Aoi’s physical strength is on par with Itadori’s. And as a jujutsu sorcerer, he has a great reserve of cursed energy which he has complete control over. Aoi proudly flaunts that he uses cursed techniques only against special-grade cursed spirits; he is THAT strong.
What makes Aoi one of the best characters is his ability to be calm during battles and strategize to defeat the cursed spirits, even the special-grade ones. He may be a mess in real life, but he is a boss on the battlefield.
7. Kenjaku
As Kenjaku technically appears in the first season, I have added his name to the list as he is the main antagonist. He reveals his identity at the very beginning of the Shibuya Incident Arc.
!!! SPOILER WARNING !!!
To leave Kenjaku out of the list of the best Jujutsu Kaisen characters would be a crime. Kenjaku is an ancient sorcerer who has lived through many centuries using his cursed technique to swap the host’s brains with his and take over their bodies.
That is how Kenjaku explained taking over Geto’s body to a confused Gojo. Everything Geto did after The Night Parade of a Hundred Demons was Kenjnaku’s doing in Geto’s disguise.
Kenajku is self-centered and selfish. He casts away his allies the moment their roles are complete in his grand scheme of things. His final goal is the evolution of humankind by optimizing cursed energy for the species.
Kenjaku can use the cursed technique of the host, regardless of who it is.
6. Ryomen Sukuna
Ryomen Sukuna is known as King of Curses. So, there’s not much I need to discuss about his power.
Besides that, he is sadistic and egotistical and sees the suffering of others, especially humans, as his prime source of entertainment.
After his reincarnation, Sukuna fails to take complete control of Yuji’s body. But he manipulates Yuji into entering a binding vow that Yuji won’t remember so that Sukuna can use it anytime he wants without anyone expecting his arrival.
That said, it is interesting to notice that he doesn’t go along with the cursed spirits unless they are of any use to him. In this whole world, only he matters.
Ryomen Sukuna is what Satoru Gojo would become if he had gone rogue, making him the top contender for the best character title.
5. Megumi Fushiguro
Megumi Fushiguro is your classic shonen deuteragonist who fulfills the shortcomings of a protagonist. Megumi is calculating, kind yet not forgiving, meticulous, and proficient in controlling his cursed technique. In short, he is the ideal battle partner for Yuji.
But is that all? No.
Unlike Yuji, who is kind to every soul on earth, Megumi’s rough upbringing has resulted in him bullying the bullies and being the ultimate delinquent in middle school.
While Yuji finds himself stuck in the grey, for Megumi, grey doesn’t exist in his dictionary. He is way too rational to be stuck in grey.
The only soft moments where you can see a vulnerable Megumi is when either of his friends or family is in danger.
Although he might not be physically strong like Yuji, Megumi – as the descendant of the Zenin clan – can stand his ground better than an average sorcerer. Sukuna has had his eye on Megumi for a while now.
4. Yuji Itadori
There aren’t many protagonists that can overpower a gorilla; and run faster than a car like Yuji Itadori, that too without any superpowers. Born with superhuman strength and child-like innocence, the world is either black or white for Yuji.
However, after accidentally becoming the host of the ultimate evil Sukuna, Yuji finds himself in the grey area. While his duty as a jujutsu sorcerer is to exorcise cursed spirits, Yuji hesitates because of his empathy towards these spirits who were once human.
We all know Yuji is extremely strong, and more so after becoming the host of Sukuna. But what makes Yuji one of the best characters of Jujutsu Kaisen is his emotional growth as the story progresses.
3. Mahito
While Yuji is the ideal human being, who is kind and understanding, Mahito is the reality of how human beings actually are. Born from the hatred of humankind, Mahito is a special-grade cursed spirit who, unlike Sukuna, doesn’t kill his enemies instantly.
Instead, he manipulates and toys with human emotions while targeting everyone around them and breaking them, savoring every moment of their suffering. And, when his target becomes lifeless and no longer fun to play with, he kills them.
Mahito’s presence as an antagonist keeps the wheel moving in Jujutsu Kaisen, making him one of the most important characters, second to Kenjaku as an antagonist.
2. Satoru Gojo
As the sole possessor of the Limitless Technique and the Six Eyes, Satoru Gojo is deemed to be the strongest sorcerer alive. You would expect someone like Gojo to be humble and polite, but that’s not who he is.
Gojo is so confident of his power that he welcomes Sukuna’s challenge to a fight and tells Yuji that he is the strongest and might just have to break a sweat to defeat the King of Curses.
He is like a friend and a ray of sunshine to his students but is the worst nightmare to anyone hostile towards them, even if they are the higher-ups of the sorcerer world. Be it threatening Gakuganji – the principal of Kyoto Jujutsu High, or tearing off Jogo’s head, Satoru Gojo doesn’t hesitate to go all out to kill a fly.
Beyond this muscle-brain appearance is a guy who is deeply concerned about the state of the sorcery world and wants his students to surpass him and take hold of the helm to steer the corrupted world in the right direction.
1. Suguru Geto
Suguru Geto is the best character in Jujutsu Kaisen. Without him, the story would have never become the battleground of morals and ethics that it is.
Without him, the question of what is right and what is wrong would have never been asked. Suguru Geto is the pillar of Jujutsu Kaisen; even after death, his impact has turned the Jujutsu world upside down.
Geto was never evil. In fact, he was one of the most kind-hearted sorcerers you would come across, who believed sorcerers exist to protect the non-sorcerers. But when he saw Riko Amanai’s death celebrated by the followers of the Star Religious Group, Geto began to question everything he stands for.
Following that, one event after another, witnessing his comrades die for no gratitude in return, made Geto choose the path of eradicating the non-sorcerers to create a better world for the sorcerers. But in the end, he realizes the wrongdoings but still agrees that he won’t fit in this corrupted world; and dies at the hand of his best friend, Gojo.

Who is Stronger than Gojo?
It is known across the sorcery world that Satoru Gojo is the strongest sorcerer alive. So, with emphasis on the term ‘alive,’ Sukuna might be able to overpower Gojo. But who knows what those blue eyes hide deep within?

Who is the Coolest Character in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Satoru Gojo is the coolest male character, while Maki Zenin is the coolest female character in Jujutsu Kaisen.
Conclusion
While writing this article, one thing that caught my attention and made me think was the lack of good female characters. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of female characters, but most of them fill the role gaps, except those who made it onto the list.
I would have loved to see female characters like Mei Mei, Yuki Tsukumo, Utahime Iori, Kasumi Miwa, and Shoko Ieiri get more screen time for proper character development.
Before concluding, I want to remind you that a popular character cannot necessarily mean it is the best character, but the best character is bound to be popular because of how much of a strong impression it has left on the viewers.
With that, I conclude my article featuring the best Jujutsu Kaisen characters. Please use the comment section and let me know if you have any suggestions, recommendations, or feedback.
