As fun as the Jujutsu Kaisen series is, you have to admit that the premise is pretty weird. A high school student, Yuji Itadori, devours one of the most sought-after relics of all time – one of Ryomen Sukuna’s fossilized fingers. Ryomen Sukuna is one of the strongest curses in the world of Jujutsu, and consuming one of his fingers causes Sukuna to incarnate into Yuji’s body.
Following this, Yuji Itadori becomes the cage holding back the ancient, malevolent Sukuna from being unleashed while consuming more of Sukuna’s fingers one by one.
Yuji Itadori has eaten 15 of Sukunas fingers out of a total of 20. Although Yuji ate the first finger to prevent cursed spirits from accessing Sukuna’s power and using it recklessly, consuming all 20 fingers will likely enable Ryomen Sukuna to take over his body and enter the world as a fully corporeal being once again.
The story is quick to state the importance of Sukuna’s fingers, but do we really know that much about them? Well, that’s what we’re going to dive into.
In this article, we delve into the mystique surrounding these cursed artifacts, their significance in the Jujutsu Kaisen world, and how many more fingers Yuji has to eat until Ryomen Sukuna is released.
What Are Sukuna’s Fingers in Jujutsu Kaisen, and Their Significance?
Sukuna is an absolute powerhouse in Jujutsu Kaisen. The undisputed King of Curses is undeniably one of the series’ most powerful and formidable characters. His strength is legendary, and he has earned the title of a special-grade curse, signifying the highest level of power among curses, but he is way above a normal special-grade curse.
Sukuna has demonstrated incredible combat prowess in his battles, easily overpowering even the strongest curses and jujutsu sorcerers.
He defeated Jogo, the most powerful curse in Mahito’s faction, with apparent ease. Even Gojo Satoru, one of the strongest sorcerers in the Jujutsu world, acknowledges that fighting Sukuna would be a tremendous challenge, though he believes he could still win.
Sukuna’s strength is not only impressive but also unmatched. When angered, he has inflicted severe injuries upon enemies, showing the full extent of his devastating power. Mahito and Jogo believe that his complete resurrection could bring about the Age of Curses, indicating the magnitude of his influence and strength.
However, Sukuna’s strength is not limited to physical prowess alone. He is also highly intelligent and calculating, revealing his character’s cunning and strategic side. He manipulates situations to his advantage and takes control of Yuji’s body whenever he can, seeking dominance and reveling in the suffering of others.
But how did he become such a powerful curse anyway? Over a thousand years ago, Sukuna was not the demonic spirit we know him as today. He was an actual human living during the Golden Age of Jujutsu.
Back then, he faced off against numerous exorcists who did everything they could to defeat him. However, he remained undefeated. We still don’t know how Sukuna died. It’s a misconception that a group of Jujutsu sorcerers defeated him, as this was a mistranslation.
After his mysterious death, his innate power transformed him into a cursed spirit. The strength of his curse prevented his body from being completely destroyed, leaving fragments of his cursed energy and spirit indestructible. These remnants were preserved in his 20 fingers from his four arms; each preserved as relics through the ages.
Sukuna’s legacy grew as time passed, and these cursed fingers became sought-after artifacts of immense power. The fingers contain a significant amount of cursed energy, making each one a special-grade cursed object.
If they were left out in the open, cursed spirits would get up to all kinds of mischief and chaos if they got a hold of them!
What Would Happen If Yuji Eats All 20 of Sukuna’s Fingers?
Let’s imagine a scenario where Yuji Itadori consumes all 20 of Sukuna’s fingers. We may not know the details of what will happen or how this will take place, but we know that if he eats all of them, Sukuna will completely manifest within him.
This poses a significant risk because there’s a high chance that Sukuna might take over Yuji’s body. If that happens, Sukuna will unleash a terrifying killing spree. The consequences would be catastrophic, and the world would be in grave danger.
In this scenario, we’d witness a full-blown death match between Sukuna and Satoru Gojo, as hinted at the beginning of the series. The two powerful forces would clash in an epic battle, with the world’s fate hanging in the balance.
If, by some chance, Yuji manages to keep his control over Sukuna, he would still face a grim fate. He would be executed to end Sukuna’s 1000-year-long reign of destruction finally.
In both scenarios, Sukuna seems to be in danger of dying at the hands of Gojo Satoru, and the majority of the Jujutsu world is against him. So why does he choose to keep letting Yuji eat his fingers? Actually, Sukuna has nothing to worry about.
Obviously, Sukuna plans to abandon or permanently take control of Yuji’s body. It’s hinted that the latter is more likely since Yuji is Sukuna’s one true vessel. Whichever choice he makes, the last thing Sukuna wants is to keep being under Yuji’s control.
This is precisely why he made the Vow of Binding with Yuji, which enables Sukuna to take over Yuji’s body for 1 minute whenever he says a keyword. Another condition is that Sukuna wouldn’t kill anyone if Yuji forgot about the vow. If Sukuna is ever in trouble, he could just take over and get himself out of harm’s way.
This is how he ended up possessing Megumi Fushiguro, but as stated, Yuji is his one true vessel. It’s theorized that Sukuna will still need Yuji to fully reincarnate, as he is the perfect host for Sukuna. Only time will tell what will happen when Yuji eats all 20 fingers, but it’s sure to be a spectacle.
How Many Sukuna Fingers Has Yuji Eaten So Far?
As of the current point in the manga series, Yuji Itadori has consumed a total of 15 of Sukuna’s fingers. The first finger was eaten during the rescue mission to save Megumi Fushigoro and his friends at the beginning of the series.
He ate the second finger right after the mission while being interrogated by Satoru Gojo and before entering Jujutsu High, as Gojo gave him that finger willingly as a “test.” The third and fourth fingers were retrieved during the Cursed Womb and Origin of Obedience Arcs, and each was taken from finger-bearers-cursed spirits who were extra powerful because they had one of Sukuna’s fingers.
Now, there has been some debate among fans about the fifth finger. During the Shibuya Incident arc, Nanako and Mimiko Hasaba gave Yuji a finger. While some fans believe that he consumed only one finger, others speculate that he was actually fed two fingers. However, the general consensus by the fans is that he was only fed one finger.
In Chapter 111, Jogo fed Yuji ten of Sukuna’s fingers simultaneously. This raises the total to 15 or 16, depending on how you interpret the events during the Shibuya Incident arc.
We have yet to find out if Yuji has consumed any more fingers after this. But now that Sukuna is possessing Megumi Fushiguro’s body, having Yuji eat the remaining fingers would be interesting, as that might make him an actual threat to Sukuna.
Conclusion
To make a long story short, Yuji Itadori has consumed a total of 15 cursed fingers belonging to Sukuna. Each finger grants immense power, but controlling Sukuna’s influence proves challenging.
As the story progresses, the pressing concern lies in Yuji’s ability to control Sukuna’s malevolent power or even fight back against him now that he no longer contains Sukuna. We can only wait with bated breath to see what will happen when that finger count finally reaches 20.
