It’s easy to understand why Jujutsu Kaisen has become such a worldwide hit. It’s a beautifully animated battle shounen with intense fights and amazing characters. Among these characters is the enigmatic and immensely powerful sorcerer, Gojo Satoru.
Gojo Satoru is one of the most popular characters in Jujutsu Kaisen. He consistently ranks number one on popularity polls, and – much to the mangaka’s chagrin – it’s easy to see why! He’s funny, charming, and the most influential character in the series, as he represents the power ceiling. He’s the most powerful character by a long shot. As a Gojo fan, you can rest easy knowing nothing bad can possibly happen to him, right?
So, a question like, does Gojo Satoru die, wouldn’t even come to your mind. But let me tell you that Jujutsu Kaisen’s story is about to take a very dark turn, and you will be left wondering about the fates of several characters, including your favorite Gojo-sensei!
If I had to answer the question of whether Gojo dies in short, the answer would be yes. Technically it is a yes because he kind of did die. But does he stay dead? Well, that’s where things get interesting! Fans were left in shock when Gojo appeared to meet his apparent demise during his battle with Toji Fushiguro, another extremely powerful character.
In this article, we’ll delve into the details of Gojo’s encounter with Toji, his life-and-death battle, and the truth behind his survival.
Gojo Satoru Vs. Toji Fushiguro – Does Gojo Satoru Die?
Although Toji isn’t a sorcerer, he’s still an extremely powerful assassin. These characters represent the power ceiling of their respective “jobs” – Gojo is the strongest sorcerer, and Toji is the strongest sorcerer killer. If Gojo were to be killed by anyone, it would be someone like Toji.
Their battle took place when Gojo Satoru was a second-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, along with his best friend, Suguru Geto. During this time, he was given a mission to safely escort Riko Amanai, who was the Star Plasma Vessel. Meanwhile, Toji was hired to assassinate Riko, and he ends up fighting both Gojo Satoru and Suguru Geto.
This is how their battle began!
Satoru, Suguru, Riko, and Misato were traveling through the slopes of Mount Mushiro to arrive at Tokyo Jujutsu High. They make it on day three of the Star Plasma Vessel Escort operation.
As they’re going up a stairway and through the school’s security gate, the team makes some small talk. Riko and Misato thank Satoru for his efforts, but as he’s tired after keeping the “Infinity” active for such a long time, he dismisses the compliment and declares that his time as a babysitter is finished.
Suddenly, Toji Fushiguro stabs him from behind with a katana. Shocked, Satoru asks Toji whether he knows him, but Toji replies that he doesn’t want to waste his time remembering “some random person’s name.”
Toji is completely engulfed by the giant hookworm curse that Suguru conjures. While Toji is busy dealing with it, Suguru worriedly asks Satoru if he’s alright. Satoru tells his friend to prioritize the escort mission.
Meanwhile, Toji uses a different katana to exorcise the evil spirit. Satoru notices him undoing Suguru’s curse and another cursed spirit wrapped around his body.
Satoru launches his own attack by creating a field of attraction behind Toji. However, Toji is extremely quick and has no cursed energy, so Satoru can’t effectively predict his movements. Toji switches to his cursed weapons, and his moves are too quick for the naked eye to track.
Satoru believes Toji won’t come close enough to utilize this new curse weapon, so he blasts him into a building with “Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue.”
Then, Satoru has the idea to detect the cursed energy of the spirit Toji uses to carry his weapons because Toji doesn’t have any cursed energy of his own. Satoru then uses “Lapse Maximum Cursed Energy Output: Blue!”
He then creates a giant field of attraction, demolishing the buildings around them and leaving Toji nowhere to hide. Satoru, believing he can see any attack, is ambushed by a swarm of Fly Heads.
He expands the “Infinity” around him to keep the Fly Heads away and suspects Toji is using them to mess with his “Limitless” technique. This works because Satoru can’t find Toji with the Fly Heads there. Cornered with his back metaphorically against a wall, Satoru wonders if Toji would go as far as to go after Riko.
However, before Satoru can continue that train of thought, Toji suddenly appears behind him and stabs him right through his throat.
You might be wondering how Toji could stab Satoru, who had his “Infinity” technique active. You are right to think that, but Toji’s weapon was no ordinary spear; it was the Inverted Spear of Heaven.
This tool forcibly stops any cursed technique. Satoru’s ability is also a cursed technique, which means it was snuffed out along with his life.
After stabbing Gojo Satoru in his throat, Toji doesn’t give him any chance to recover. He forces the blade from his throat and down his torso, brutalizing Satoru some more, and then leaves him slumped into a pool of his own blood.
Gojo’s Triumphant Return
Let’s rewind a bit. When Toji stabbed Satoru, he forced him into survival mode. Instead of seriously trying to fight back, Satoru focused on the Reverse Cursed Technique to heal himself and not die on the spot. He knew he had no chance of making it out alive if he went on the offensive.
Satoru wasn’t used to this technique as it wasn’t explained very well to him before, but he was still able to pull it off because Toji didn’t actually cut his head off. If he had, that would truly be the end of Satoru.
But because he didn’t, Satoru was not only able to heal completely but also gained the ability to use the technique “Six-Eyes” without any time restriction. This is how he became the strongest sorcerer in the series. This was terrible news for Toji, who then had the strongest sorcerer seeking revenge on him.
After almost crossing over to the other side, Gojo Satoru makes a comeback. This time, he has the upper hand in the battle against Toji Fushiguro, and ultimately, he wins the fight!
Does Gojo Satoru Die During the Shibuya Incident Arc?
There’s a special-grade cursed object called the Prison Realm that can trap anything inside of it in a dimension that can’t be escaped from. The bearer of this object must recite “Prison Realm Open” and remain within a four-meter radius of the target for a minute in order to trap them.
Traping Gojo Satoru, who has incredible speed and perception, is a seemingly impossible task, so Kenjaku had planned every detail in advance because he knew how ludicrous this idea was. It is quite challenging to contain Satoru, even for a minute. Despite this, Kenjaku, aka Pseudo Geto, concocted the perfect plan to do just that.
Satoru has a unique way of processing information compared to the average person. In an instant, he can process the same amount of information as an average person processes in a minute.
Knowing this and having suffered defeat because of Satoru’s Six-Eyes before, Kenjaku surmises that it would be enough to stop Satoru for only a few moments because that would be “one minute’s worth of time in Satoru’s brain.”
The Shibuya arc’s main goal was to accomplish Kenjaku’s plan to seal Satoru. Using the transfigured humans as a distraction, Mahito, Choso, and Jogo successfully caught Satoru’s attention, forcing him to perform a domain expansion for 0.2 seconds. By the time Satoru got his bearings, he was right in front of the Prison Realm. Before he could deduce what was going on, Kenjaku made his appearance.
Satoru hadn’t seen Kenjaku before that moment, so he didn’t know he possessed his dead best friend, Geto Suguru’s body. Shellshocked, Satoru was brought back to old memories of his formative years with Suguru. This took only a split second, but it was already too late, and he was sealed in the Prison Realm.
Is Gojo Satoru Still Sealed in the Prison Realm?
After being sealed in the Prison Realm, Gojo Satoru was taken out of the picture, and Kenjaku could move on with his plans.
I don’t intend to give too many spoilers, but Gojo stays sealed inside the Prison Realm for a long time. It took a lot of chapters for fans to finally see him make his reappearance after Yuji Itadori, Yuta Okkotsu, Maki Zenin, and others were able to release him from his prison.
Of course, this won’t happen anytime soon in the anime, but it has already happened in the recent manga chapters.
So, Does Gojo Satoru Die in the Manga?
This is yet another question that might come to your mind, but there’s good news. At the current point in the story, Gojo Satoru isn’t dead.
However, we have no idea what to expect from the story because Gojo is engaged in one of his biggest fights ever. He’s currently fighting Sukuna, who has left Yuuji’s body and possessed Megumi Fushiguro’s body, where they are both going all out, so we have no idea what will be the outcome of this battle.
Hopefully, Gojo Satoru would come out of this fight alive, but seeing that his opponent is the King of Curses, the legendary Ryomen Sukuna himself, chances are slim for that to happen.
Conclusion
Gojo Satoru is the strongest character in the series by far, and while some argue that this makes him boring, it also means that mortally wounding him is the mark of things getting deadly serious.
It’s an accomplishment by itself to land a single hit on Gojo, so the outcome of his fight against Toji was completely unexpected. Technically, Gojo Satoru did die during his battle with Toji Fushiguro, but he managed to activate the reverse cursed technique to heal himself just in time.
So, Gojo is still alive and kicking, but the manga isn’t over yet. We have yet to see if he’ll make it to the end of this exciting series. And when we have more details, I’ll update this article with new information!
