If you religiously follow Jujutsu Kaisen, you might have noticed that every incident that has occurred or is currently taking place in the story is either the cause or effect of the Shibuya Incident Arc.
“Instead of trying to kill him, focus on sealing him. Use a special grade cursed item…like prison realm” – Geto to Jogo (JJK Manga Chapter 11)
“On October 31, in Shibuya… we need to prepare ourselves for sealing Satoru Gojo with everything we’ve got.” – Geto to Mahito, Jogo, and Hanami (JJK Manga Chapter 53)
The above quotes show how Pseudo-Geto has been planning the Shibuya Incident for a long time. Just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, Pseudo-Geto had to sow the seeds and water them patiently to get the fruits of labor during the Shibuya Incident Arc.
To explain the Shibuya Incident Arc is like experiencing Satoru Gojo’s domain expansion for one second; your brain will find it hard to process all the information.
That is why I will explain the Shibuya Incident Arc so you can digest the arc and get a proper idea about how the story unfolded from the beginning to the end. This explanation will take you through the incidents of the arc one step at a time and in order.
But before that, let’s go through the details of the arc. The Shibuya Incident Arc consists of 58 chapters, running from chapter 79 to chapter 136.
!!! SPOILER WARNING !!!
The duration of the Shibuya Incident is approximately 5 hours long. The incident starts at 7:00 PM and ends around midnight, as the last time mentioned was 11:36 PM when Pseudo-Geto arrived to save Mahito. Now that the details are out of our way – let’s talk about Shibuya Incident Arc.
Shibuya Incident Arc in Jujutsu Kaisen, Explained
The arc starts with Satoru Gojo waking up from a dream about his first meeting with Megumi Fushiguro.
After waking up, Gojo sends Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara to Utahime, where they find out that Mechamaru is the mole, who is nowhere to be found.
Mechamaru Dies; Fails to Warn Gojo
When Utahime, Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara were trying to locate Mechamaru’s real body, Kokichi Muta (Mechamaru) was in the midst of healing his body with Mahito’s idle transfiguration.
Mahito and Pseudo-Geto made a binding vow with Kokichi in exchange for information regarding Jujutsu High, resulting in the attack during the Kyoto Goodwill Event. The binding vow also mentioned not harming anyone from Kyoto Jujutsu High, which they sneakily avoided.
After getting healed, Mechamaru uses a gigantic mechanical armored puppet to take down Pseudo-Geto and Mahito. Although he wanted to contact Gojo to tell him about Pseudo-Geto’s Shibuya plans, the mastermind’s curtain interfered with the signal.
So, after a hard-fought battle to reunite with his friends, Mechamaru lost his life on October 19, 2018!
Satoru Gojo Gets Sealed; Pseudo-Geto Succeeds!
Satoru Gojo knew that the civilians trapped inside the curtains were a trap laid only to summon him. Gojo arrived and went directly to the origin of the curtain, where he met Jogo, Hanami, Choso, and later on, Mahito and Pseudo-Geto.
Although he didn’t cast a domain because of the civilians present there, Gojo uses his cleverness to trap Hanami and exorcise him. When Gojo is about to exorcise Jogo, Mahito unleashes a thousand transfigured humans to make it even more difficult.
Pushed to the edge, Gojo sets his mind to sacrificing some civilians to exorcise them and casts his domain expansion for 0.2 seconds to take out all the transfigured humans.
Pseudo-Geto took this chance, and right after Gojo deactivated his domain, the mastermind opened the Prison Realm and appeared before Gojo, who was surprised to see the face of his friend he killed a year ago.
Before Gojo could realize it, Pseudo-Geto completed the Prison Realm’s conditions and sealed Satoru Gojo on October 31, 2018. However, Gojo soon realizes that it is not his late friend but an impostor who reveals that he has swapped brains to take over Geto’s body.
Inside the prison realm, Gojo shows concern but says that it’ll be fine as he has faith in everyone.
Mechamaru – The Tactical Thinker Contacts Yuji
As someone with great tactical thinking, Mechamaru predicted not only his death but also the sealing of Gojo. For that, he planted small communication puppets in Shibuya with his remaining cursed energy to share information with the sorcerers even before his death.
Mechamaru puts his bet on Yuji as the safest option and contacts Yuji to tell him about the ongoing situation.
Yuji Itadori Teams up With Megumi Fushiguro
As part of the Mei Mei Team, Yuji Itadori, Mei Mei, and Ui Ui were initially heading to Shibuya as a backup, but when another curtain similar to Shibuya appeared in Meiji Jingumae Station, they ran over there to take down the curtain.
As the only one who is least likely to be a mole, Mechamaru contacts Yuji through one of his three communication puppets and tells him about Gojo getting sealed.
As per Mechamaru’s information and instruction, Yuji leaves the Mei Mei Team and heads over to Shibuya to inform other sorcerers about Gojo. Yuji gets on top of a building in Shibuya and screams at the top of his lungs to let Nanami Kento and others know that Gojo got sealed.
Moments later, the Nanami team meets with Yuji. Nanami tells Yuji to team up with Megumi and Ino to take down the curtain that is stopping the sorcerers from entering. Nanami also asks Ino to relay the information if he comes across the other teams and goes to meet Ijichi.
NOTE:
- Mei Mei Team – Yuji Itadori, Mei Mei, Ui Ui
- Nanami Team – Megumi Fushiguro, Kento Nanami, Takuma Ino
Yuji & Megumi vs. Jiro Awasaka
After locating the curtain’s spellcaster, the trio engages in a battle against Jiro Awasaka, Ogami, and her grandchild. Yuji and Megumi take on Awasaka, while Ino takes on the other two.
But, no matter how much they attacked, Awasaka came out unscathed, which made Megumi think about Awasaka’s cursed technique. After thinking for a while, Megumi used Rabbit Escape to retreat with Yuji.
He then explained to Yuji about Awasaka’s cursed technique – Inverse – and how to counter it. They then successfully defeat Awasaka and take down the curtain that didn’t let the sorcerers in.
Toji Fushiguro Rises From the Dead!
While Megumi and Yuji were facing Awasaka, Ino fought against Ogami and her grandchild. Ino summons auspicious beasts using his cursed technique but fails to hit Ogami as her grandchild puts his body on the line.
Granny Ogami starts a ritual and summons Toji Fushiguro by shapeshifting her grandchild using a seance technique. Ino, unaware of Toji’s might, tries to fight him but gets beaten and thrown down from the roof of Shibuya S Tower. If not for Megumi’s shikigami, he would’ve been dead.
Following the fight, Yuji decides to go to Shibuya alone, as Megumi takes Ino to Shoko for healing.
Nanami Beats Shigemo to a Pulp
Nanami heads to Ijichi’s location and sees him on the ground, covered in blood. He gets enraged by the one behind it.
Meanwhile, Maki tells Nobara and Akari Nitta to head toward Ijichi’s location, as he might be in danger. On their way, they ran into Shigemo.
To reach Ijichi as quickly as possible, Nobara tells Akari to pretend to be hiding and take another route to escape. Being the sadist he is, Shigemo uses the creepy sword to track down Nitta and attacks her. Trying to protect her, Nobara also gets hit by Shigemo after underestimating the coward too much.
After following the trails, Nanami arrives and realizes that Shigemo is the culprit. He beats Shigemo to a pulp, knowing that this coward was the one who killed the assistant managers and also the one who severely injured Ijichi.
By doing so, Nanami saves Nobara and Akari Nitta from losing their lives. Following that, Nanami assures them that Ijichi is okay and tells them to wait for the rescue.
Then he goes to meet the Zenin Team to head down to B5F. Nobara insists on joining, but Nanami declines by saying she would only get in the way, as only Grade 1 Sorcerers are fit for the upcoming fights.
NOTE: Zenin Team – Maki Zenin, Naobito Zenin, Nobara Kugisaki (now waiting for rescue)
Yuji vs. Choso
As soon as Yuji steps foot in Shibuya station, he encounters Choso, who attacks immediately to avenge his brothers.
After taking the attack, Yuji was unable to move one arm. Even though Yuji initiates a counterattack, he fails to hit the final blow due to Choso’s Blood Manipulation Cursed Technique. Mechamaru did help Yuji to get the upper hand for a while, but it didn’t help much.
Throughout the fight, Yuji kept taking deadly blows, the last being in his liver, but continued for the sake of his allies until he fell unconscious. Choso couldn’t kill Yuji because of a flashback where he was with his brothers and Yuji. It was a flashback that overwhelmed his senses!
Megumi to the Rescue
After joining Maki and Naobito Zenin, Nanami tells them about Gojo getting sealed. Following that, they come across Dagon, who evolves into his final form after realizing that Hanami is dead.
None of their attacks worked on Dagon, who then casts domain expansion. Inside Dagon’s domain, everyone’s on the brink of death; Nanami loses an eye, Naobito loses an arm, and Maki gets overpowered.
Thankfully, Megumi breaks into Dagon’s domain for the rescue. He uses domain expansion to open a hole inside Dagon’s domain to escape. But before they can escape, Toji Fushiguro enters through the hole.
While Maki, Naobito, and Nanami were struggling against Dagon, Toji came in, overpowered Maki, snatched the Playful Cloud from her, and exorcised Dagon in a matter of seconds. Except for Naobito, no one knew Toji’s identity.
However, right after Dagon’s exorcism, Toji took Megumi outside, and Jogo arrived to burn Nanami and the other two Zenins in flames. Jogo senses something.
Sukuna Takes Over!
Taking advantage of an unconscious Yuji, Mimiko & Nanako Hasaba feed him one finger to summon Sukuna and avenge Geto. Sensing that from afar, Jogo comes and adds ten fingers to the tally, giving Sukuna temporary control over Yuji’s body.
As a token of appreciation, Sukuna asked the Hasaba sisters if they had any requests, but they ordered him instead of requesting and lost their lives.
As a token of appreciation to Jogo, Sukuna makes a deal – if Jogo lands one hit on him, Sukuna will do as the cursed spirits please, for the time being. At that time, Jogo didn’t know that the gap between him and Sukuna was beyond comprehension.
Megumi vs. Toji – Son vs. Father
Neither Megumi nor Toji were aware of each other’s identity. Toji instinctively brought Megumi out as his next worthy opponent. Megumi knew he was nowhere near Toji’s level, so he tried to escape, but it was Toji, after all; once he set his eye on the prey, it was over.
However, when things were not looking well for Megumi, Toji had a flashback about his deal with Naobito to sell Megumi. After coming back to his senses, Toji asks Megumi’s name. Then Toji stabs himself in the head after knowing that his son hasn’t taken the name of Zenin and ends Ogami’s cursed technique.
Megumi thinks back to how Naobito mentioned his name as Toji but realizes that instead of thinking about that, he should look for Maki and others before going to Shoko Ieiri for healing.
Suddenly, Megumi gets ambushed by the most cowardly character of Jujutsu Kaisen – Haruta Shigemo, who slashes him from behind. Megumi is almost out of cursed energy, so as a last resort, he summons Mahoraga and starts an exorcism ritual that includes both him and the coward.
Sukuna Protects Megumi
Meanwhile, Sukuna toys with Jogo until the end. Before burning Jogo to ashes, Sukuna praises him and says he is strong and should be proud of it.
After his fight with Jogo, Sukuna gets welcomed by Uraume. He tells Uraume to continue the preparations, as he will be free soon, and hurries to Megumi’s location after sensing something.
If not for Sukuna, Mahoraga would have killed Shigemo, resulting in Megumi’s death as the completion of the ritual. Sukuna healed Megumi and confronted Mahoraga in a battle to study the shikigami’s abilities before defeating it. He then killed Shigemo and dropped Megumi near the Shibuya Tollgate, where Shoko Ieiri was healing the injured sorcerers.
The next thing Sukuna does is wake Yuji up to witness the destruction he has brought upon the people Yuji once promised to protect. Yuji breaks down!
Nanami Dies, Yuji vs. Mahito – The Final Fight
After surviving Jogo’s flames, Nanami starts heading over to save Megumi. With burned scars and a hole in his left eye, Nanami kills every transfigured human on his way to be finally greeted by Mahito.
Yuji, who has just picked himself up from the despair and decided to keep fighting against the cursed spirits, witnesses Nanami getting blown to pieces by Mahito.
Nanami’s last words to Itadori were,
“Itadori…you’ve got it from here.” (JJK Manga Chapter 120)
Thus begins the most decisive battle of the Shibuya Incident Arc. It is a battle between Mahito’s will to kill people and Yuji’s will to save people.
Mahito kept provoking Yuji by using transfigured humans and killing any surviving civilians during the battle. But Mahito kept his distance from Yuji, knowing that a single misstep would lead him to death. However, the provocation was not for fun. Mahito had a plan that would completely break down Yuji.
Nobara Dies? Yuji Gives Up
After the paramedic team came to the rescue, Nobara left Akari in their care. Knowing that Shoko Ieiri is in Shibuya, Nobara decides to join the fight, disregarding Nanami’s warning. She comes across Patch-face. At that time, she didn’t know it was Mahito’s double.
Mahito’s Double didn’t take this fight seriously, and that’s what Nobara wanted. The moment Patch-face let his guard down, Nobara hit him with Resonance, dealing critical damage to the double and the original body. Seeing that, Yuji realizes that Nobara is fighting on the other side.
After delivering Resonance, Nobara figured out that the one she’s fighting is a double, which can’t use the cursed technique. And then, unfortunately, she let her guard down; Mahito switched places with the double and used Idle Transfiguration on Nobara, which almost killed her.
Yuji witnesses that and loses his composure. Not wasting a second, Mahito pounces on Yuji with a Black Flash. He continues the barrage of attacks while mocking Yuji’s fragile justice.
Mahito was inches away from delivering the final blow when Brother Todo came to save the day.
Aoi Todo Arrives; Yuji Defeats Mahito!
Aoi Todo tells a disheartened Yuji to stand up and fight as they are jujutsu sorcerers. Todo says as long as they live, allies who lost their lives will not be defeated. Then, Arata Nitta assures Yuji that Nobara’s survival chances are more than zero.
Yuji stands up and joins the fight by delivering a Black Flash to Mahito.
“I’ll be sure to take on your share of suffering too, Nanamin.” – Yuji Itadori (JJK Manga Chapter 127)
The battle dragged on, and Mahito got so irritated by Aoi Todo’s Boogie Woogie that he risked using domain expansion and succeeded in severing one of Todo’s arms.
After taking Todo out of the equation, Mahito realizes the true essence of his soul and evolves into his full form. While Mahito gets carried away, Yuji plans to deliver Black Flash with his maximum cursed energy output.
Being overconfident in his strength, Mahito lets his guard down once again. But unlike his fight against Nobara, he takes Yuji’s Divergent Fist head-on, a technique that Gojo predicted to be one of Yuji’s strongest weapons. And the expected happens – Mahito is down on his knees, running for his life.
But Geto interferes and saves Mahito, at least it seemed like that.
Mechamru Bids Goodbye to Miwa
While Mahito was fighting with Yuji and Todo, Miwa and the rest of the Kyoto Jujutsu High allies were on their way to Shibuya. Miwa had one of the last communication puppets that Mechamaru planted before his death.
As his reserved cursed energy was running out, Mechamaru told Miwa that he was the one who doctored the missions so that she, Mai, Momo, Noritoshi, and Utahime stayed away from Shibuya. He also clarifies that Aoi and Arata are the exceptions because he knows they will survive the war regardless.
After that, Mechamru confesses to Miwa before wishing her all the happiness in the world and disappears.
Pseudo-Geto Absorbs Mahito & Flaunts His Power!
Yuji runs towards Pseudo-Geto to take the Prison Realm, but Pseudo-Geto gives him a taste of cursed spirit manipulation, a technique of real Geto.
He then talks about how Uzumaki has become more deadly now that he has absorbed countless semi-grade one or higher cursed spirits. Finally, Pseudo-Geto absorbs Mahito to add to his creepy collection.
Pseudo-Geto is then surrounded by the Kyoto Jujutsu High sorcerers; however, none of the attacks seem to do anything at all. Pseudo-Geto was about to use Uzumaki, but Grade 1 sorcerer Kusakabe saved the day.
Choso, Pseudo-Geto & Yuji Are Related?
Choso comes running in and realizes the man who took over Geto’s body is Noritoshi Kamo, which makes sense considering the fact that Choso can use the Kamo Clan’s Blood Manipulation Cursed Technique.
Noritoshi Kamo is the evilest sorcerer in history, a disgrace to the Kamo clan. Pseudo-Geto tells Choso that it’s one of his many names. Choso runs towards Pseudo-Geto with murderous intent, but everyone present there, including him, gets frozen by Uraume’s cursed technique. Except for Yuji because he is the vessel of Sukuna.
NOTE: The real identity of the one who took over Geto’s body will be revealed after the Shibuya Incident Arc, including how Yuji, Choso, and the impostor are related.
Yuki Tsukumo Greets Pseudo-Geto
Yuki’s appearance as the closing act of the Shibuya Incident Arc is meaningful, considering she was the one who triggered Geto into choosing the darker side, resulting in the current events. If not for Yuki’s arrival, many sorcerers there might not have survived.
After arguing about their opinions on humanity’s evolution, Pseudo-Geto casts idle transfiguration on two types of non-sorcerers:
- On vessels like Yuji to make them stronger
- On non-sorcerers who, despite having cursed techniques, couldn’t use them because of their incapable brains. After the idle transfiguration, they can use cursed techniques as well.
“This… is the world of the future.” – Pseudo-Geto (JJK Manga Chapter 136)
According to Pseudo-Geto, survival of the fittest is the ideal way to human evolution. Before exiting, Pseudo-Geto unleashes countless cursed spirits of the sorcerers and tells Sukuna that the Golden Age of Cursed Techniques is beginning again.

Conclusion
The Shibuya Incident Arc is one of those arcs where you need to re-read it at least twice to get the gist of the story. In this article, I have tried my best to explain the arc in a way that is easy to understand and fun to read.
The highlight of this arc is Pseudo-Geto, who looks down on the sorcerers and the cursed spirits alike and controls them like a true puppeteer. This incident shows how events as big as this can seem small compared to the vision of a character, which in this case is Pseudo-Geto’s goal to trigger human evolution.
The Shibuya Incident Arc has been a roller-coaster ride. There have been fascinating revelations, character development, sad deaths, and satisfying ones. With that, I conclude this article. If you have any suggestions, recommendations, or feedback, please use the comment section below.
