The anime adaptation was so good that I had to read the manga to see where the story goes, and it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever taken. The manga of Vinland Saga is fantastic! It is a seinen manga series that takes us back in history to the time of the Vikings and their love for war.

What is Vinland Saga Manga About?

Before I start praising the series and talking about why I believe it enters the realm of legendary titles, I think knowing the manga’s premise is in order, so let’s start with that first.

Vinland Saga introduces a medieval world and mostly focuses on the Viking culture, showcasing a complex story involving revenge. The story first introduces Thorfinn, son of Thors, working for Askeladd’s mercenary company as they involve themselves in wars over English territory. Thorfinn aims to defeat Askeladd in a duel and to do so, Askeladd constantly takes advantage of his proficiency in the battle to give a duel as a reward. But the story is much deeper than that!

It first followed a younger Thorfinn and his family as they try to survive in a ruthless land where snow is the one true king. Thors is shown as a man of kindness, even after being a strong warrior before settling down and making a family; this is showcased multiple times during the story’s beginning.

Sadly, Thors is visited by a guest, a comrade he used to have back when he was a warrior and is tasked with a mission to be freed from the sins of having deserted from battle and faked his own death. This quest involves joining a fight in a foreign land, but everything is but a plot to take Thors’ life, and Askeladd is the person tasked to do so.

During the whole ordeal, Thorfinn, the main character of the series, hides in Thors’ boat, joining the crew. Thors and his crew find themselves dealing with an ambush, all settled by the man who visited him and are attacked by Askeladd and his mercenary band. Thors is strong enough to overwhelm Askeladd and his crew and is only defeated after Thorfinn is taken hostage. This is where Thorfinn’s path of revenge begins.

The premise might not sound as complex, but the series, in my opinion, showcases the best character development I have managed to enjoy in years, not only involving Thorfinn but many more characters as well. The story only gets better as you read it, and you’ll find yourself begging for more at some point.

Conclusion

Sadly, Vinland Saga is still in serialization. Once you reach its current volumes, which we already talked about, you will probably get desperate to enjoy more content, so you will need the patience to overcome the urge to read the whole thing from beginning to end.

Even then, Vinland Saga is one of those series I can’t recommend enough, and I will keep recommending it until my mouth is dry. If you have the time and will to start it, you will not regret it, and you will also be able to see why I believe Vinland Saga deserves a place in the Hall of Fame of manga.
