By the time the first season ended, it had become one of the best anime series of the year, and it won’t be wrong to consider it one of the best anime series of all time. Even the movie “Mugen Train,” which came out after season 1, became the highest-grossing anime movie worldwide!

The anime follows the story of Tanjiro Kamado, who’s been taking care of his family and living a peaceful life with them ever since his father’s death. One day after returning home from work, he finds that his whole family has been slaughtered except his younger sister, Nezuko Kamado, who has been transformed into a bloodthirsty demon.
He vows to protect the only sibling he now has, even though she is a demon, and he sets out to look for a cure to transform his sister into a human.
Along his journey, he discovers the existence of the Demon Slayer Corps, an elite organization that fights the demons lurking in the dark of the night. He joins the corps to get closer to the “Demon” responsible for the death of his family and get a step closer to finding the cure!
That’s the basic synopsis of the show, and I will keep it that way as I don’t want to spoil anything for you. You just need to follow the Demon Slayer watch order, and you’ll understand why this shonen anime series became so popular in a short period.
Best Demon Slayer Watch Order:
At the time of writing this, there are a total of 3 seasons and one movie that make up the entire Demon Slayer franchise. And unlike an anime like the Monogatari series, Demon Slayer is a pretty straightforward story. There are no convoluted timelines or confusing plots, and as long as you watch the seasons as they are released, you’ll be fine.
But just in case you need help, below is the correct order to watch Demon Slayer. If you follow that order, you will be able to enjoy the series as it was meant to be enjoyed!
- Season 1: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019)
- Type – TV
- Episodes – 26
- Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train (2020)
- Type – Movie
- Episodes – 1
- Season 2 – Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Entertainment District Arc (2021)
- Type – TV
- Episodes – 11
- Season 3 – Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Swordsmith Village Arc (2023)

Unlike most anime series, Demon Slayer’s chronological order is the same as the release order. So you don’t need to get confused between the two and just watch the show in the order mentioned above.

How Dark is Demon Slayer Anime?
After reading the show’s synopsis, you’d feel that this will be a pretty dark and gruesome series, and that’s true to a certain extent.
Yes, there are demons that devour humans all the time, but this is a shonen title, so the carnage isn’t that extreme. And being a shonen title, it has its fair share of stupidity and hilarious elements.
A few earlier episodes are pretty dark and emotional as Tanjiro deals with his family’s death and his sister’s transformation. But once he joins the Demon Slayer Corps and makes a couple of friends, the story starts shifting towards a lighter tone.
Of course, they are fighting demons and risking their lives while doing so, but the antics of Zenitsu and Inosuke, combined with the innocence of Tanjiro, result in some pretty funny encounters.
So yeah, this is an anime show packed with all sorts of emotions. While you watch the show, you will laugh with the characters, you will feel their tension, you will feel pity for them, and you will also cry. And that’s why it is one of the best anime series to watch right now!
Should I Read The Demon Slayer Manga Instead?
Normally, I would say yes to this question, but in the case of Demon Slayer, I would recommend you stick to the anime.
Ufotable has done a wonderful job animating the show, especially the battle sequences, and you just won’t get the same feeling while reading the manga.
For example, take the “Tsuzumi Mansion Arc” in the first season.
The battle between Tanjiro and Kyogai is so beautifully done. You can feel the tension and helplessness Tanjiro feels at the beginning of their battle because Kyogai has the ability to control the entire house and can instantly shift the gravity however he pleases. It just doesn’t look that good in the manga!
Plus, the anime is pretty faithful to the manga. Unlike a show like Tokyo Ghoul, which takes a ton of liberties with the story and deviates from the original plot in the manga, Demon Slayer anime doesn’t do that. So, even if you only watch the anime, you won’t miss any critical plot points.
I am not saying you shouldn’t read the manga, you should definitely read it if you can’t wait to know what happens next. That’s what I did when the first season concluded. I couldn’t control myself because I wanted to see the story unfold, so I read the entire Demon Slayer manga.
You can do the same, and since Demon Slayer is a completed manga, you won’t have to wait for a new chapter, either!
So, it entirely depends on whether you want to read the Demon Slayer manga or not. I recommend waiting until the third season, i.e., Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc, is finished and then picking up the manga to continue with Tanjiro’s story and reading the next arcs!
