How Dark is Demon Slayer Anime?
After reading the show’s synopsis, you’d feel that this will be a pretty dark and gruesome series, and that’s true to a certain extent.
Yes, there are demons that devour humans all the time, but this is a shonen title, so the carnage isn’t that extreme. And being a shonen title, it has its fair share of stupidity and hilarious elements.
A few earlier episodes are pretty dark and emotional as Tanjiro deals with his family’s death and his sister’s transformation. But once he joins the Demon Slayer Corps and makes a couple of friends, the story starts shifting towards a lighter tone.
Of course, they are fighting demons and risking their lives while doing so, but the antics of Zenitsu and Inosuke, combined with the innocence of Tanjiro, result in some pretty funny encounters.
So yeah, this is an anime show packed with all sorts of emotions. While you watch the show, you will laugh with the characters, you will feel their tension, you will feel pity for them, and you will also cry. And that’s why it is one of the best anime series to watch right now!
Should I Read The Demon Slayer Manga Instead?
Normally, I would say yes to this question, but in the case of Demon Slayer, I would recommend you stick to the anime.
Ufotable has done a wonderful job animating the show, especially the battle sequences, and you just won’t get the same feeling while reading the manga.
For example, take the “Tsuzumi Mansion Arc” in the first season.
The battle between Tanjiro and Kyogai is so beautifully done. You can feel the tension and helplessness Tanjiro feels at the beginning of their battle because Kyogai has the ability to control the entire house and can instantly shift the gravity however he pleases. It just doesn’t look that good in the manga!
Plus, the anime is pretty faithful to the manga. Unlike a show like Tokyo Ghoul, which takes a ton of liberties with the story and deviates from the original plot in the manga, Demon Slayer anime doesn’t do that. So, even if you only watch the anime, you won’t miss any critical plot points.
I am not saying you shouldn’t read the manga, you should definitely read it if you can’t wait to know what happens next. That’s what I did when the first season concluded. I couldn’t control myself because I wanted to see the story unfold, so I read the entire Demon Slayer manga.
