Oshi no Ko season 2 was officially announced as soon as the mystery anime that bewitched us this summer ended. This wasn’t really a surprise considering that the first season was well-received by fans worldwide. So, in this article, we’ll talk about everything we know about the upcoming season!
Debuting at the peak of Covid-19, Aka Akasaka’s manga series “Oshi no Ko” wasn’t expected to perform well. But what seeped out of those manga panels bedazzled so many fans that the series sold over a million copies within one year of its release.
Surely, this success can be attributed to Mengo Yokoyari’s ethereal manga illustrations. But I think it had much to do with the series’ unpredictable plot. After all, most of us hadn’t anticipated Oshi no Ko to shift from an idol series to a murder mystery and then to a supernatural comedy drama – that too within its very first chapter.
Considering this, it’s no wonder that Oshi no Ko anime caught so many people by surprise that the series became an instant hit.
In fact, the hype grew to the point that Oshi no Ko anime temporarily dethroned “Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood” as the top anime series in the MyAnimeList catalog.
But as Oshi no Ko anime has concluded, we’re all increasingly anxious to know if the series has been renewed for a season 2 or not. So, let’s find that out!
Will There Be A Oshi no Ko Season 2?
It’s official! Oshi no Ko season 2 has been announced! Studio Doga Kobo has officially greenlit the anime for another season!
But that’s all the good news we have at the moment. We have no concrete details about the release date or even a release window at the time of writing this. But that’s normal, considering the first season just ended. So, as the days pass, we’ll likely get more information about the second season.
Oshi no Ko Season 2 Release Date
The anime has been renewed for a season 2; unfortunately, there’s no official release date for Oshi no Ko season 2 yet. As fans, we all want the anime to come out as soon as possible, but even though the second season has been announced, we cannot expect a release date before 2024.
The reason why I’ve mentioned the next year isn’t just because Oshi no Ko season 1 has just ended, and most anime series take around 6 months before releasing another season, but it’s also because Doga Kobo Studio has a tradition of releasing only three animated seasons a year.
So far, the studio has already released Technoroid Overmind and Oshi no Ko anime. But it has scheduled Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrance for the latter half of 2023. Meanwhile, the Doga Kobo has also scheduled new contracts for 2024, including Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night and Mobius Dust.
And so, it seems the studio won’t be able to pick Oshi no Ko season 2 until next year.
However, Oshi no Ko anime has become the top-grossing product of Doga Kobo studio. So, we may expect a season 2 much earlier than our anticipations.
Oshi no Ko Season 1 Ending, What Happened So Far?
A gynecologist named Gorou Amamiya becomes the secret caregiver for his favorite idol, Ai Hoshino. But he gets murdered moments before Ai’s delivery, only to be reborn as her son, Aquamarine.
But Aqua’s not the only one reborn with memories from his past as his twin sister, Ruby, is also a reincarnation of a patient who had died earlier in that same hospital.
Though Ai raises her twins in complete secrecy, she gets murdered by the same stalker who had killed Gorou. And so, the anime transitions into a chase where Aqua deduces that his father may be part of the show biz and an accomplice in Ai’s murder.
As the plot unravels, Ruby follows in her mother’s footsteps to stardom, and Aqua chooses to remain on the sidelines of the production business. But his desire to find Ai’s murderer drives him into an acting career.
So far, Oshi no Ko’s first season has featured Ai’s twins climbing the popularity ranks where Akane and Aqua debut together in a romance reality show called “LoveNow.” Later, the two decide to pretend to date for public appearances.
At the same time, Ruby’s idol group, which consisted of Kana Arima and Mem-cho, successfully performed at the “Japan Idol Festival.” As a result, they’re now expected to perform even better.
But things are looking exceptionally well for Kana, who is offered an acting job in a new show biz project called “2.5-D Stage Play of Tokyo Blade.” Along with Kana, Aqua and Akane will be part of the stage play as well, along with several other new characters.
But as you’re here looking up Oshi no Ko season 2, you may be more interested in knowing what the upcoming season will hold for us plot-wise. So, let’s talk about that!
What to Expect From Oshi no Ko Season 2?
So far, Oshi no Ko has shown how Aqua has entered the show biz just to find his father, as he believes that his father is an accomplice in murdering his mother – Ai Hoshino. Meanwhile, Ruby and her idol group successfully debuted in the “Japan Idol Festival.”
Since the season covered the first 40 manga chapters or four tankōbon volumes, we can expect Oshi no Ko season 2 to pick the story from the 5th manga volume.
In the upcoming season, we’ll see Akane, Aqua, and Kana work together in the “2.5-D Stage Play of Tokyo Blade.” As Akane and Aqua are only dating for public appearances, their fake romance may cause Kana to feel jealous, as she has growing feelings for Aqua. And so, we can expect the second season of Oshi no Ko to feature some drama between the characters.
And, of course, there will also be the marvelous 2.5D stage play that will be a sight to behold. Plus, the second season will also feature a very interesting revelation regarding Aqua and Ruby’s father.
As the project “2.5-Dimensional Stage Play of Tokyo Blade” extends beyond manga volume 7, we expect the upcoming season to cover more than one manga volume. In other words, Oshi no Ko season 2 will also feature 10-12 episodes, just like the first season.
Coming to the cast and crew, Doga Kobo has a tradition of re-contracting the same production staff for one anime series. So, we can expect the cast and crew members from the first season to reprise their roles in the next season as well.
And so, we can anticipate director Daisuke Hiramaki to return. Meanwhile, we’ll also see:
- Takeo Ōtsuka as Aquamarine Hoshino
- Yurie Igoma as Ruby Hoshino
- Megumi Han as Kana Arima
- Manaka Iwami as Akane Kurokawa
- Rie Takahashi as Ai Hoshino
- Hisao Egawa as Ichigo Saitō
- Lynn as Miyako Saitō
Oshi no Ko Season 2 Trailer:
The studio hasn’t really released a trailer for the upcoming season, or even a teaser video, at this point. But they did release an announcement video confirming that season 2 of Oshi no Ko is on its way. You can take a look at the video yourself below:
Is Oshi no Ko Manga Finished?
Oshi no Ko manga is still ongoing and has 122 chapters, at the time of writing this, compiled into 11 volumes. Though it’s unclear exactly when the manga will conclude, the original writer Aka Akasaka stated in his latest interview, “The end is in sight and has already been decided.”
In other words, the manga finale will soon get published, and we’ll likely not see manga reaching 200 chapters.
Conclusion
With Oshi no Ko anime’s first season concluding, all eyes are set on studio Doga Kobo to deliver another season that is just as good as the first was. Though season 2 has been officially announced, there have been no solid details regarding it at the moment. But if I were to guess the release date, we shouldn’t expect Oshi no Ko’s second season to come out earlier than 2024.
I hope this article answered all your queries regarding the upcoming Oshi no Ko season 2. But there’s a lot that still needs to be known, so I’ll make sure to update this article as new information becomes available.
