The most crucial power system in the One Piece world has to be the mysterious and fantastical “devil fruits” that many of its characters have eaten. These crazy-looking fruits grant their users immense strength, insane abilities, or weird powers. And in exchange for these powers, they end up sacrificing the ability to swim, which is a pain for sea-bearing pirates!
Though this sacrifice is a huge threat when you spend your entire life around the water, the strength trade-off you get is almost always worth it!
Devil Fruits come in all shapes and sizes, granting various powers from summoning fire to controlling magnetism. However, in the One Piece world, they are categorized into numerous subtypes that have been expanded throughout the story.
In this article, we’ll go through all the devil fruit types introduced in the story of One Piece so far. But before that, let’s have a look at what are the devil fruits exactly!
What Are Devil Fruits in One Piece?
In the story of One Piece, we have been introduced to over 200 devil fruits; around 150 of them are canon, and the remaining were introduced in non-canon stories!
Across more than one thousand chapters in the One Piece manga, we have seen wacky abilities come in all different forms. Each devil fruit is different, even if they might have similar properties. Even fruits like Ace/Sabo’s Mera Mera no Mi, which creates fire, and Akainu’s Magu Magu no Mi, which creates Magma, are very different.
Although the devil fruits give the users access to some mystical ability, they take away their ability to swim. It’s such a big thing that if a devil fruit user goes into the sea, their entire body would turn stiff, and they would be unable to move a muscle, eventually drowning deep into the ocean unless someone were to save them.
And that’s not all, as even coming in contact with seawater can considerably weaken a devil fruit user. However, if the devil fruit users can stay away from the seas and the seawater, they can use their powerful abilities to deal with dangerous enemies.
There are also rules when it comes to devil fruits. There can only be one user of a particular devil fruit. If the user of a devil fruit dies, that devil fruit reincarnates from a nearby fruit, which can then be eaten, and a new user would gain the abilities of said fruit.
Moreover, the fruit’s powers can’t be shared. The first person to take a bite out of the fruit will attain its powers; if a second person eats it next, they will get nothing.
There’s also the rule that one person can only eat one devil fruit; however, there’s an exception. Blackbeard is a pirate who has eaten two devil fruits, which is one of the biggest mysteries in the story, considering it’s impossible for anyone to consume and utilize two devil fruit powers. I am sure we’ll learn more about this in the future!
Devil fruits are separated into seven categories, which all result in various abilities for their user. These seven categories are:
- Paramecia
- Special Paramecia
- Logia
- Zoan
- Artificial Zoan
- Ancient Zoan
- Mythical Zoan
Devil Fruits are separated depending on their specific powers, from how it alters the user’s body to what they can manipulate around them.
Let’s get into what each devil fruit types are in detail!
All Devil Fruit Types in One Piece:
1. Paramecia-Type Devil Fruits
Paramecia devil fruits generally give their user some form of bodily alteration, substance generation, or environmental manipulation.
These are the most common type of devil fruits in the One Piece world and offer an array of powers for their user. We have seen quite a few of these fruits throughout the series because of how common these fruits are.
Buggy the Clown’s Chop Chop Fruit is one of the most notable and arguably the most popular of the bunch. This was one of the first devil fruits introduced into the series back in the East Blue Saga. The fruit allows Buggy to detach and control parts of his body at a short distance. From removing his torso to even separating his hands, he can do it all!
Even Whitebeard’s devil fruit, the overpowered Gura Gura no Mi, is a Paramecia-type devil fruit!
Earlier, we were led to believe that Luffy’s devil fruit was also a Paramecia-type, the Gomu Gomu no Mi, but that isn’t exactly the case. Now we know the true nature of the devil fruit that Monkey D. Luffy has eaten!
2. Special Paramecia-Type Devil Fruits
Paramecia fruits are further separated into a subtype, that being the “special Paramecia.” The name is pretty self-explanatory, as it’s a Paramecia with some unique properties.
We don’t know much about these fruits as only one has been seen in the series: Katakuri’s Mochi Mochi no Mi. These fruits fall outside of the normal classification of Paramecia and are yet to be explained.
Katakuri’s Mochi-Mochi no Mi, which is much more like a Logia fruit, allows him to turn his body into Mochi. Mochi is a Japanese style of rice cake, giving him similar abilities to Luffy’s Gomu Gomu no Mi. We have no idea why Katakuri’s Special Paramecia breaks the convention, but hopefully, later on in the final saga of the series, we might get some more explanation, especially now that Dr. Vegapunk has been introduced.
3. Logia-Type Devil Fruits
Next up on the list of devil fruit types is Logia-type devil fruit, which is one of the rarest types of devil fruit in the One Piece world. The powers obtained by these fruits are incredibly powerful and generally only go to the most gifted fighters.
These fruits allow their user to transform and manipulate a very specific element. They gain immense defensive and offensive powers, therefore becoming the powerhouses of the One Piece world.
One of the most notable Logia-type fruits has to be Crocodile’s Suna Suna no Mi. This turned Crocodile’s body into sand, meaning any bullets, fists, or swords would go straight through him. Back in Alabasta, it took Luffy pouring water on him to defeat the Warlord. Nowadays, the only way to defeat these opponents is to use Armament Haki, as Logia-type devil fruit users are virtually unbeatable.
As the story of One Piece entered the New World, these abilities became much less overwhelming as our characters became stronger. However, characters like Akainu with his Magu Magu no Mi and Kizaru with his Pika Pika no Mi are still huge threats to the Straw Hat Pirates and the series’ strongest characters.
4. Zoan-Type Devil Fruits
Zoan-type devil fruits are pretty complex and fall into four different categories as of the latest manga arc, Egghead Island!
Normal Zoan-type devil fruits allow their user to turn into a specific animal, granting a look similar to them and a meteoric boost to their physical abilities in the process. We have seen many Zoan-type fruits in the series so far, so luckily, we know a lot about them.
Generally, users of these fruits have insane recovery times and an inhuman level of strength. The basic Zoan-type devil fruit has three forms: Beast, Hybrid, and Human. Skilled users of these fruits, like Chopper and Kaido, can gain access to even more forms.
The most iconic Zoan fruit in the series has to be Tony Tony Chopper’s Hito Hito no Mi, which turned him from a reindeer into a human/reindeer combo.
5. Artificial Zoan-Type Devil Fruit
As the name implies, these are fake devil fruits created by humans in the series. Throughout the story, we see two people creating and manufacturing Artificial Zoan-type devil fruits. These are Caesar Clown and Dr. Vegapunk.
Most of these creations have become less effective than legitimate Zoan-type fruits, but they are still extremely dangerous when they appear.
The big thing about these Artificial Zoan-type devil fruits is their drawbacks, as almost every instance of these fruits leads to something going wrong. SMILE Devil Fruits were seen throughout Wano Kuni, where users of these fruits became half animals rather than full animals. These transformations were also permanent, unlike users of normal Zoan-type fruits like Rob Lucci and Kaku.
Momonosuke’s artificial devil fruit, created by Dr. Vegapunk, is the most iconic out of the bunch and has seen no real downsides, at least so far. This is a clone of Kaido’s Uo Uo no Mi. In Egghead Island, we discovered that Vegapunk called this fruit a failure only because it did not replicate Kaido’s fruit color correctly, instead making Momonosuke’s dragon pink.
6. Ancient Zoan-Type Devil Fruit
Ancient Zoan-type devil fruits are a very specific type of Zoan fruits that we saw predominantly in the Wano Kingdom arc.
This devil fruit classification turns its eater into an ancient beast, often some form of dinosaur or prehistoric creature. These are among the rarest of the devil fruit types in the series, as we have only seen a handful thus far. Ancient Zoan-type users pose a massive threat in battle thanks to their overwhelming strength and form.
Each Ancient Zoan fruit transforms its user into an offensive and defensive beast, making them perfect for any Yonko’s squad. Kaido used these devil fruits on his strongest commander, the Tobi Roppo. Even King, Queen, and Jack had these fruits, and they were the most powerful opponents aside from Kaido to be seen in the series.
Out of them all, King’s Ryu Ryu no Mi is the most notable, as it transformed the Lunarian into a Pteranodon. The insane power from this fruit and his Lunarian abilities made for a huge challenge for Zoro during Wano Kuni, almost resulting in the swordsman’s death.
7. Mythical Zoan-Type Devil Fruit
And finally, we have the Mythical Zoan fruits, the rarest of all devil fruit types in the series and more powerful than any other on this list.
The Mythical Zoan Fruit is a type of devil fruit we haven’t seen much in the series. Those who have eaten these fruits are like mythical beings, powerful and boasting insane abilities that rival the gods.
Anyone who gets their hand on one of these devil fruits can turn themselves into mythical creatures, such as Kaido’s Dragon, Marco’s Phoenix, Sengoku’s Buddha, and the latest addition, Luffy’s Sun God Nika. These fruits give their user the usual speed and strength boost but also offer them a variety of crazy abilities and forms to push their powers even further.
From creating meteoric shockwaves with Sengoku’s Buddha powers to Marco’s ability to regenerate and heal with his flames, they’re crazy, to say the least! This specific subclass of devil fruits will play an even more significant role in the story of One Piece as we enter into its final saga!
Conclusion
In conclusion, the world of One Piece is filled with a diverse array of devil fruits, each granting unique and extraordinary abilities to their users. From the common Paramecia fruits to the rare and powerful Logia and Mythical Zoan fruits, these fruits have played a significant role in shaping the battles and adventures of the series.
As we delve deeper into the final saga of One Piece, devil fruits will undoubtedly play an even larger role than we can imagine, especially after the reveal of Luffy’s Gear 5 abilities, the true nature of his devil fruit, and the immense impact it will have going forward!
So, if you’ve got friends who want to learn more about the different devil fruit types in One Piece, share this article with them and help them understand this unique power system a little bit better!
