What is Blue Lock Manga About?

Blue Lock focuses on a training program that goes by the same name. This training program aims to possibly create the greatest, most egotist striker of the Japanese story, all to bring Japan to stardom in the world of soccer.

This, of course, is easier said than done, as it will require many talented individuals and one of the punishments of the said training program is that those who fail it won’t be able to play in the Japanese league ever again. Their soccer career will effectively be over!

The story then introduces Yoichi Isagi, a high-school student who doubts his play style and wants to further improve and develop his skills. To do so, he decides to join Blue Lock to become the best Japanese player as soon as he receives an invitation from the program.

As you can see, the premise is rather simple, but once you start reading the manga, you’ll notice that the series is far from being a regular soccer title. Although the series has some similarities to other sports titles, like Haikyuu!!, it does have a big difference: it feels like a soccer battle royale.

What do I mean by this? Well, for instance, all the characters in the Blue Lock program are locked in a facility that pretty much resembles a prison to ensure that they only focus on becoming the best player there is. This facility is run by Ego Jinpachi, the man tasked with boosting Japan to the high end of the world of soccer, and he works as the overseer of the place.

Now, to achieve their ambitions, the members of the program will have to play against themselves in rather unique, harsh training sessions, some of which can get violent very quickly.

The story, however, is pretty solid, well-written, and does portray some level of bonds between the character, including the main character’s rival, and the person he admires, Rin Itoshi.

For people who like sports shonen series that rely more on dark and sinister vibes while also maintaining a calm aura, this is definitely one of the best titles to get into, and I recommend it for those who are into sports manga. It’s popular enough to get its own anime adaptation, which concluded in 2023 and is already renewed for a second season as well.

Still, you might want to get to the manga at some point or even start with the manga, as the manga has a lot more content, and the drawings and the manga panels are insane!
