From the hands of Soul Eater’s author, Atsushi Ohkubo, comes a very popular manga that achieved the same level of popularity, if not more, and its name is Fire Force! What is Fire Force Manga About?
Atsushi Okubo’s Soul Eater series was well known for relying heavily on comedy. Although it was one of the greatest action series at the time and achieved an anime adaptation with fantastic choreography, it was, without a doubt, the comedy aspect and its fascinating, funny characters that made it so special.
In the case of Fire Force, the title is a little bit more serious, and although it does have some level of comedy, it relies more on action, drama, and a thicker plot filled with mysteries.
For instance, Fire Force’s world is set in a world 50 years after The Great Cataclysm, an event that almost wiped out life on Earth. This event involved the world being engulfed in flames, leaving most of its land inhabitable and bringing the phenomenon known as “Spontaneous Human Combustion.”
This phenomenon causes human beings to burst into flames from inside, causing some of the inflicted to turn into Infernals, creatures made of fire that lose the capacity to reason due to the pain they experience at the time.
Now, humankind lives in the Tokyo Empire, and our protagonist, Shinra Kusakabe, lost his parents 12 years before the events of the story and awakened as a third-generation pyrokinetic, earning the title of “Devil’s Footprints” as he is capable of igniting and using his feet to fight and release flames.
Shinra dreams of joining the Special Fire Force, tasked with saving as many lives as possible from Spontaneous Human Combustion and Infernals. He claims to want to become a hero due to a promise he made as a kid and to save as many people from the fate that wronged him when he was a child.
He eventually joins the 8th brigade, the smallest company of all the Special Fire Force brigade. Its main objective is to take care of infernals, purify their souls, and discover the truth behind Spontaneous Human Combustion. To do this, they will have to investigate all other brigades, as they have their own science and research divisions and hide information from the general population, including the other brigades.
Conclusion
As you might have concluded, the actual plot of Fire Force can be rather complex. But it can also be a treat for those who enjoy not only action, comedy, and a pinch of fan service but also a story that unravels a great mystery that involves the end of the world as we know it!
Not only that, but as a shonen title, Fire Force makes excellent use of its characters, their backstories, their growth and development, and the way they fight their enemies, often involving other pyrokinesis users and infernals. They also develop bonds among themselves, and some relationships that might start through hostility change as you keep on reading.
Now that you know how many volumes of Fire Force there are, I definitely recommend giving it a chance! And try to rope in your friends in your reading journey, so you always have someone to discuss the plot with!
