Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a smash hit when it first released on Netflix, and fans have been eagerly awaiting news about its sequel. Well, we now have confirmation that a sequel is on its way!
Studio TRIGGER has officially announced that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 is in production! The upcoming season is not a direct sequel to the first season, but rather a continuation of the series, which will tell a different story while set in the same world.
The makers of the anime confirmed at Anime Expo 2025 that the upcoming season, titled “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2,” will be a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077!

CD Projekt Red, the developer of the hugely popular Cyberpunk 2077 game, revealed that Studio TRIGGER will return to handle the animation for the sequel season as well. Considering the high-quality work they did on the first season, this decision seems like a no-brainer because why would the makers choose to switch studios when Studio TRIGGER did just a fantastic job!
While the series is in production, no release date has been announced. It makes sense because the production has just started, so it will take a while before the makers reveal the release date.
What to Expect From Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2?
While the first season of the anime series was set in the same world as the game, Cyberpunk 2077, it served as a prequel to it. The anime was set one year before the events of the game!
The anime featured the expanded world of Night City, focusing on the main characters, David Martinez and Lucyna “Lucy” Kushinada.
CD Project Red, the game’s developer, had marketed the anime series as a standalone season from the very beginning. But considering just how popular it became when it premiered, it was bound to get a sequel.
However, the first season wrapped up the story of David Martinez quite nicely, so it won’t be continued in the second season.
The sequel will introduce a new set of characters and feature a story that will further expand the high-tech world of Cyberpunk. However, the sequel will also be set in Night City!
As for who will be in charge of the upcoming Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2, the makers have announced that Kai Ikarashi will direct the upcoming season. He had also directed episode 6 of the first season.
Bartosz Sztybor, the writer/producer of the series, revealed that Night City has a lot of stories to tell, and David’s was just one of them. He commented, “I wasn’t satisfied with the sadness… so I want you to be even more sad now.”
Considering that the upcoming sequel is described as “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge,” you shouldn’t expect a happy ending!
