Dragon Ball Super anime might have wrapped up its first season, but the manga is going strong with new chapters released monthly. And the last chapter of Dragon Ball Super shocked fans worldwide by introducing Black Frieza, the strongest form of Frieza to date!
In just a few panels of his appearance, Frieza again proved why he is the most dangerous villain in the Dragon Ball series. No one comes close to his menacing powers and villainous tendencies, and with the new form unlocked, he might be the strongest mortal character in the universe.
If you haven’t read the latest chapter yet, or you are just an anime watcher who found out about Frieza’s new form and wanted some information on it, then you might be wondering how exactly Frieza unlocked this new transformation. Just what kind of hellish training did this fan-favorite villain undergo to become one of the most powerful characters in the show?
That’s what we are going to focus on in this article. Today, we will talk about who exactly Black Frieza is, how strong he is in the series compared to other characters, and how he got this powerful!
Who is Black Frieza in Dragon Ball Super?
Black Frieza is ultimately our favorite Dragon Ball villain, Frieza, but in his ultimate Black form! It’s not a new character; it’s just a new transformation.
The antagonist appeared in the story in the final stretches of “Granolah the Survivor Saga” of Dragon Ball Super manga.
Goku, Vegeta, and Granolah were having a hard time defeating Gas, a member of the Heeter Family. Goku and Vegeta couldn’t defeat Gas because the Heeters had gathered the Dragon Balls, summoned the Dragon, and wished to make Gas the “strongest being” in the universe. This is why no mortal being in Universe 7 would have been able to defeat Gas.
Like we saw in the manga, even after being in a completely zombie-like state, beaten up beyond recognition, Gas kept getting back up and gave our heroes a tough time.
But that only lasted until Frieza arrived at the battle scene!
Now Frieza and the Heeters have a long history; they are actually business partners. Not equal partners because Frieza is far stronger than the Heeters. But Elec, the leader of the Heeter family, always wanted to take down Frieza, take control of his army and dominate the universe.
So, Elec was the one who called Frieza to Planet Cereal because he wanted Gas to kill him now that Gas was the strongest being in the universe.
But it didn’t turn out exactly as Elec and the Heeters had hoped!
Why?
Well, when the Heeters made a wish to the wish-granting dragon to make Gas the strongest in the universe, Frieza was in a completely different dimension, so he was exempt from this condition.
As Frieza mentioned, he found a space-time chamber in one of the planets he conquered, similar to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber on Earth, and he went there to train. So, he was in a completely different dimension when the wish was made.
When Frieza arrived at the scene, he immediately killed Gas without breaking a sweat. And he followed it up by killing Elec as well and got the remaining Heeters to serve his army as servants, essentially getting rid of the entire Heeter Family.
But before leaving the planet, Frieza unveiled his Black Frieza form that he achieved after training for 10 years in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. In his Black form, he attacked Goku and Vegeta, who were in the True Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego forms, respectively, and knocked them out in a single hit.
And then he left the planet!
How Did Frieza Achieve His Black Frieza Form?
As I mentioned above, Frieza found a chamber where time flows differently than in Universe 7, and he could squeeze in 10 years worth of training inside the room. This hellish training helped Frieza unlock this new transformation!
Now, you might wonder, does this transformation actually make sense? Or is this just another attempt to bring back a villain our heroes have long surpassed in terms of strength?
I think this transformation makes total sense, and we have been given hints about Frieza’s potential for a long time.
Frieza, along with his father, King Cold, is a part of a race known as “Frost Demons.” Members of this race are extremely powerful, but even among them, Frieza and King Cold were considered strong because they were essentially mutants of a kind.
We were first introduced to him in Dragon Ball Z during the Frieza Saga. He was extremely powerful; no character in the series could come closer to him in terms of strength. It took Goku to unlock the Super Saiyan transformation to beat him.
King Cold saved his son and revived him by transforming him into Mecha-Frieza. They then arrived on Earth to take revenge on Goku, but Trunks killed both.
We thought that was the end, but Frieza’s underlings collected the Dragon Balls and revived him in the Dragon Ball Super series. The revived Frieza then mentioned that he wasn’t strong enough to take revenge on the Saiyans and decided to train himself.
Here’s the thing, Frieza was always more powerful than most in the universe. He was so powerful that King Cold had told him to be wary of only two people, i.e., Lord Beerus and Majin Buu; everyone else was beneath him. So, he never really trained himself.
It turns out that Frieza has a ton of latent potential within him. In Dragon Ball Super’s “Golden Frieza Saga,” he came to Earth to take his revenge and revealed his new Golden Frieza form that he had achieved by undergoing hard training. It was a pretty powerful form, making him stronger than most of the characters introduced in the series, but it still fell short against Goku and Vegeta’s Super Saiyan Blue forms.
Ultimately, he was defeated and killed, and he went right back to hell.
But following the Tournament of Power, Frieza was revived once again, and he took his rightful place as the emperor of the universe and went about his business, that is, conquering the planets.
And in one such planet, he found the space-time chamber, trained hard for 10 whole years, unlocked his ultimate form, Black Frieza form, and reclaimed his position as the strongest being in the universe.
And we still don’t know if this is his limit. He might still have a ton of future potential because, from what we have seen so far, the more Frieza trains himself, the more powerful he becomes!
How Strong is Black Frieza?
That question has a simple answer; Black Frieza is very strong! Strong enough to knock down both Goku and Vegeta in their Ultra forms with a single punch!
But we have only seen this form for a couple of panels. We still don’t know exactly how powerful this form is or if it makes Frieza stronger than both Goku and Vegeta.
As Frieza himself mentioned, achieving the Black form took plenty of toil. And he only stayed in this form for like a few seconds, enough to knock Goku and Vegeta down, and he immediately undid the transformation and returned to his regular form.
And then, he just left. He didn’t finish Goku and Vegeta off. That doesn’t seem in character with Frieza. His only goal so far has been taking revenge on the Saiyans who have defeated him and humiliated him, so him leaving the knocked down Saiyans alive seems a bit suspicious.
I guess that the Black Frieza form is plenty strong, but he hasn’t gotten it in complete control. He still needs to train to master it. Maybe there’s some blowback of using a form as powerful as this, and Frieza didn’t want to reveal his weakness.
Well, whatever the case, we will likely see Black Frieza more in the coming arcs of Dragon Ball Super. So we’ll have to wait and see what exactly he is planning!
Is Black Frieza Stronger Than Lord Beerus?
Black Frieza is definitely strong and may be one of the strongest beings in the universe, but he is in no way stronger than Lord Beerus.
Lord Beerus is the God of Destruction and will likely stay that way for a long time. We still haven’t seen Beerus go all out in his battles. Even when he fights Goku in his Ultra Instinct form, Beerus hasn’t broken a sweat. So, considering that Frieza can defeat Beerus is a waste of time!
Is Black Frieza Stronger Than Jiren?
Now, this might be true to some extent. In his Perfected Ultra Instinct state, we have seen that Goku is on par with Jiren. Goku is not stronger, but strong enough to go toe to toe with him.
Now, Goku isn’t able to use Perfected Ultra Instinct whenever he pleases, so he relies on True Ultra Instinct, which he more or less has mastered. And Black Frieza was able to defeat him while he was in this state. So, it’s likely that Black Frieza would fare well against someone like Jiren, maybe defeat him if he were to go all out!
Is Black Frieza Stronger Than Broly?
If we are talking about Broly, then I am not sure. In the movie Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Frieza, in his Golden Frieza form, had no chance against Broly. Even Goku and Vegeta, in their Perfected Super Saiyan Blue forms, couldn’t match the berserker in raw strength.
It took Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Gogeta and then transform into the Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta to overpower Broly in his Legendary Super Saiyan state.
So, I am assuming that Black Frieza might be stronger than Broly, but if Broly were to transform to his Legendary Super Saiyan form, Frieza might not have any chance against him!
Conclusion
That brings us to the end of the article on Black Frieza! If you have read the manga, you must be excited to read the next chapters and find out how this new development affects the overall story.
I am looking forward to the next chapters because Frieza is one of my favorite characters and one of the most popular anime villains of all time. Everyone wanted to have him come back as a strong opponent in the series.
So, let’s hope that Akira Toriyama and Toyotarou do justice to Black Frieza and show us how strong he is in the upcoming manga chapters!
