Though Maho Film Studio announced By the Grace of the Gods season 2 in June 2021, there was no further news until August 2022. Several fans were beginning to contemplate a cancellation notice for the sequel.
However, Maho Film Studio released an official trailer on September 16, 2022. And it was announced that the second season of By the Grace of the Gods will premiere in January 2023.
A key visual was also released to commemorate this event!
Somehow the teaser caused more surprise than hopeful anticipation as netizens were found skimming through the internet to confirm the news. So, if you are still not convinced that the second season of this isekai anime is on its way, then keep reading for more details!
Is By the Grace of the Gods Season 2 Confirmed?
Yes, the season is most certainly coming out in January 2023. To be exact, the first episode of the upcoming season will air on January 8, 2023.
Perhaps you are new to anime and, therefore, still wondering why the news was more shocking than joyful. If that’s the case, you must understand that it’s common for anime seasons to get suddenly canceled, even if they generate significant revenue or have a dedicated fanbase.
Now, Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko, aka By the Grace of the Gods, caused a massive uproar with its first appearance as a 2014 light novel series on a self-publishing website – Shōsetsuka ni Narō. But, within a single year, author Roy and illustrator Ririnra decided to redraft the entire story.
Despite the revision, the hype furthered in 2017 when Hobby Japan started publishing it under HJ Novel Imprint while Ranran created its manga. Eventually, Maho Film Studio picked the series for an anime adaptation as one of their first-ever projects.
But the anime adaptation suffered a huge marketing setback because of covid-19 crisis. Consequently, By the Grace of the Gods made a relatively quiet debut in the fall of 2020.
With minimal viewership ratings and Maho Film Studio’s inexperience, it seemed the season would never gain enough fans to be considered for a sequel. But within a few months, By the Grace of the Gods became one of the most-watched isekai anime.
And so, a much-awaited yet unexpected announcement for By the Grace of the Gods season 2 was made on June 4, 2021.
However, the series’ ratings gradually dropped as generic remarks falsely labeled the anime as “just another isekai.” The slow pace of season 1 didn’t help the cause, either. Besides, there was no precedent for Maho Film’s commitment or budget as the studio was only recently established in 2018.
Therefore, by mid-August 2022, most hopes for a sequel were let go, so it was truly surprising when Maho Film Studio released an official trailer for season 2 on September 16, 2022.
How Many Episodes Will Be in By the Grace of the Gods Season 2?
Season 1 contained 12 episodes, covering light novel volumes 1-3. Therefore, if Maho Film Studio were to keep up its tradition, the second season would likely consist of 12 episodes as well, adapted from the light novel volumes 4-6.
Since the series has at least 11 compiled light novel volumes, if season 2 stands the test of time, we have enough content to anticipate another season of By the Grace of the Gods.
Where Can I Watch Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko Season 2?
Since season 1 of By the Grace of the Gods was co-produced by FUNimation, the pilot episode was released during FUNimation Con Virtual event held in July 2020. Consequently, season 1 was available to stream at FUNimation, Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.
However, Sony acquired FUNimation and later merged with Crunchyroll. So, there was some confusion regarding streaming services. But Crunchyroll will be streaming the new season starting in January 2023.
What to Expect from By the Grace of the Gods Season 2?
Though the trailer has not given away much of the plot, it has shown both Ryoma Takebayashi and Ellaria Jamil. So, we can expect much of the same casts from season 1. But the teaser included a new character, i.e., a fox girl named Miyabi, who will be voiced by Yuiko Tatsumi.
Director Takeyuki Yanase, composer Hiroaki Tsutsumi, and the designers from season 1 are returning for season 2. But, Yuka Yamada is replacing the head writer Kazuyuki Fudeyasu for season 2.
However, Yuka Yamada has previously handled scripts for Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Samurai Warriors: Legend of the Sanada, Slow Loop, and Within Distant Time Overnight Dance: Movie. So, we can expect a decent script for the second season of By the Grace of the Gods.
The official website of By the Grace of the Gods unveiled Azusa Tadokoro and Youtuber MindaRyn for the opening and ending themes, respectively.
What Will By the Grace of the Gods Season 2 Be About?
Kami-tachi ni Hirowareta Otoko, aka By The Grace of the Gods, is the story of a 39-year-old man, Ryoma, who lived the worst possible life and received an unfortunate accidental death in his sleep. But three deities show him their grace and reincarnate him as an 8-year-old boy in a magical realm.
For the next three years, Ryoma lives alone in a forest while researching magical creatures like slimes. His solitude ends when Reinhart crosses paths with him and invites him to live in his dukedom.
As the series progresses, Ryoma fascinates everyone around him with his physical strength and magical prowess. But he forms a unique friendship with Reinhart’s 11-year-old daughter named Eliaria Jamil.
By the end of season 1, Eliaria had to leave Ryoma to pursue her education. Meanwhile, Ryoma’s business was booming. Both depart with heavy hearts and promise to meet three years later. So, season 2 may start three years into the future when Ryoma and Eliara will reunite.
There will undoubtedly be more light-hearted comedic scenes, new slimes, magical techniques, and festivities. We can also anticipate Ryoma to teach his skills to a new generation. But season 2 will also add an emotional dimension to Ryoma’s character.
But to see exactly what happens in By the Grace of the Gods season 2, we will have to wait till January 2023 when the anime finally starts airing.
