Unless you’re a 90’s kid, there’s a pretty slim chance you’ve even heard about Atari. Back when Nintendo was just in its infancy, and Sony and Microsoft were practically non-existent in the gaming industry, it was Atari that ruled the throne. Now, it’s an altogether different scenario with Atari overrun by other console giants. Or has it?
In a recent mysterious video teaser released by the company itself, glimpses of a new hardware is revealed. Check it out:
Called the AtariBox, the video doesn’t reveal much than just some metal wood and an illuminated Atari logo so, based on the video itself, we couldn’t rule it off as a new gaming console. But that’s exactly what it is. In an exclusive interview with VentureBeat at the E3 2017 last week, the company’s CEO, Fred Chesnais, confirmed that the company is indeed working on a new hardware, saying: ‘We’re back in the hardware business’.
Chesnais refused to disclose more information about the AtariBox but he did add that the console would be based on PC technology and that the hardware was still under development.
With Atari trying to crawl its way back up to fame, do you think the AtariBox will be a success, or will it be overshadowed by bigger, monster consoles like the Xbox One X? Let us know what you think in the comments section below!
