At the I/O conference held this Wednesday, Google revealed the marvels of the Google Lens that is taking augmented reality to a whole new level. For a long time, Snapchat had been at the top of the game when it came to augmented reality with its popular flower crown and a variety of other lenses. Recently, Instagram followed suite and introduced its own take on AR. However, the augmented reality that the Google Lens has revealed is game changing.
The augmented reality feature incorporated in the Google Lens lets you find information about real-life things just be directing your camera at them. Think of it like a Pokedex. Point your Google Lens at an inanimate object such as a flower or a plant, and through Google’s advanced technology you can get the relevant information about the object in seconds. It will also let you take a picture of a book or an item at a restaurant and get you reviews and pricing information about them accordingly.
According to the details revealed in the conference, Google Lens was defined as a “set vision-based computing capabilities that can understand what you’re looking at and help you take action based on that information.”
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai directed the conference on Wednesday and was quoted to have said: “All of Google was built because we started understanding text and web pages. The fact that computers can understand images and videos has profound implications for our core mission. We can give you the right information in a meaningful way.”

The Google Lens will first be shipped with the Google Photos and will sort out your existing library. It will also be introduced with Google Assistant where it will contact directly with your photos. The Lens will soon be available on other Google products too.
This new Lens might be a newer version of the Google Goggles (which let you scan barcodes) or the Google Word Lens (which let you translate languages). However, the new Google Lens will have more versatile features and will be a lot more informative than these precursor lenses.
There are other services and companies that have already employed augmented reality into their platforms. One example is Pinterest but its focus is mainly on buying products. Microsoft has similar augmented reality incorporation into its Holo Lens that has been used in advanced procedures such as the Scopis for surgeons performing vertebral surgeries. However there are limited consumer products for it. On the other hand, Google plans to launch its technology to a wide audience by introducing it to Android operated smartphones.
The search engine powered by Google is still its most successful and popular invention. With the Google Lens, this search will cross the barriers of normal internet browsing and could make a breakthrough in the world of the Internet. The exact launch date of this innovative lens was not revealed in the I/O conference, however it is said to be available later this year. We are excited for this new reveal that was made by Google and have high expectations from the company. Let us know in the comments below about your thoughts on the new Google Lens.
